Solution to fixing steam startup crash + quicksave problem

Post » Fri Dec 10, 2010 1:42 am

Thank you gtfagan for the quicksave solution here:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123313-attn-best-way-to-fix-quicksave-bug/

After playing for a few hours, I could NOT start up my game after trying out many different solutions found on the internet. When I launch up the game through steam, as soon as I push "Play" it will say that the game have stopped working and kicks me out.
It looks like steam cloud is messing up our save games and cause Fallout to crash right when we start the game.

1) What I did was use gtfagan's solution of removing yourself from permissions to the steam/userdata/xxx folder that Steam keeps your corrupt saves games.
Note: After doing this, you should get a "you don't have permission to view this folder" when you try to open stea/userdata/xxx folder.
2) Afterwards, goto your Documents/My Games/FalloutNV folder and backup your save games.
3) Note that the save game you want is probably named "xxx.fos.bak" (eg. autosave.fos.bak). Change this to autosave.fos
4) Delete the entire My Games/FalloutNV/ folder.
5) Copy your backup up saves back into My Games/FalloutNV/Saves/ folder
6) Play the game.
Note: Steam will tell you that it cannot sync their cloud data. This is because Steam will not be able to access the userdata folder and thus cannot corrupt your save games!

I was unable to startup the game as it crashed as soon as I hit play. I followed your advice and I am now able to play without any issues!

This should be at the top, as I've tested every other method around and nothing else has worked.

Thanks for this.

None of these worked. I have 2 completely different Windows 7 64 bit Professional machines and both error exactly in the same spot with the same message in the Event Log. Soon as I press play, I get the spinning icon and then nothing. No messages, no crashes, nothing. The Event Log is the only thing that tells me something went wrong:

Faulting application name: FalloutNVLauncher.exe, version: 1.2.14.0, time stamp: 0x4c980907

My desktop is a custom built quad-core Q9650 with a Sapphire 5850 and 4GB ram. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1520 with an nVidia 8600m (dual-core proc). So here I have 2 different setups with the exact same outcome. I bought a physical copy at GameStop. Keep in mind I haven't even gotten to the main menu where you can select Data Files and setup Options. That doesn't even come up.
