I have been a lurker on this forum since before the patch was released, trying to find any information on whether the game was getting fixed or not, and have continued to come here to view reports of problems post patch. This post has prompted me to sign up and reply because I want to share my experience(s) so far with the game post-patched and the PS3 crash problems.
Currently both my husband and I are playing Skyrim. Both of our games suffered the same problems pre-patch as everyone else but his file was always particularly glitchy and he suffered a lot more frame rate drop than I ever did, even when my file sized became comparable to his at 13MB. After the patch his game began to freeze completely, usually once he hit a town after clearing out the same dungeon for the 3rd time (due to crashes). At one point in time, mid auto-save, the game locked up completely. This resulted in a hard system reset of our PS3.
At this point in time we had decided it was time to dump several of our older save files and other game saves we had to free up some room on the HDD (hoping this would rectify the problem) When entering the game saves folder it became noticeable that 3 of the auto-saves for his game where now corrupted data. We continued on, deleted the corrupted saves and freed up some room on the hard drive, and went back to get our Skyrim on. At this point in time he had decided it might be time to start a NEW game and see if the PS3 lockup would happen still. So, the new game started, everything was running like brand spanking new.... except... when he went to save the new game lo and behold... his OLD GAME WAS GONE NOW!! CORRUPTED!
To make a long rambling short, I will get to the point of things. I fear that people who put a lot of hours (his game was at 140+ hours and mine at 90+ right now) and kept on cracking at it even during severely glitchy moments, may have really screwed up their games. The reason I say this is because my game now runs fine... even while I was battling 2 Dragons, a Giant and 2 Mammoths at once. (Which you have to admit is alot going on at once) I have minor frame rate issues here and there but at least it doesn't crash... *knock on wood* yet... but I never had the issues that he had from day one with his game so it makes me wonder if my game save was just less [bleeped] than his.
So, my advice, if you don't want to start a brand new game but are afraid of the PS3 lockup... best to have several save files in case one crashes while saving and gets corrupted. And turn off that auto-save if you haven't already. I know this might not be ideal to people but its only going to be temporary because eventually all these bugs will be ironed out. *crosses fingers* Also, as soon as the game starts lagging after extended play, SAVE - RESET, it has worked wonders for me rather than letting the frame rate drop lower and lower until gameplay becomes impossible and thus crashing completely.
