I really, REALLY wanted magic to be cool!

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:33 am

Ok,

I created a profile JUST for this specific reason. lol.

The first thing I did was make a character that was entirely focused on magic... the "pure" mage, if you will. Now, early game I wasn't expecting my spells to do anything glorious or noteworthy.. but I had my hopes that, once Master spells were obtained, I'd start to see some real cool stuff.. because, there really is so much potential.

Needless to say, I'm completely disappointed in the system and I've decided to scrap my 15-20 hour character and start over as a pure warrior.. the classic "nord" as seen on the box art, etc.

I was hoping (and on some surface level, expecting) the magic to have real, PHYSICAL effects relative to the spell... for example, if I burn someone with a high level fire spell I want their body to turn black and fall apart (possibly leaving an ash pile?)... or, I want to freeze someone and see their body fall apart into tiny pieces when they tip over and fall...

I'm disappointed in the fact that the magic really has no correlating effect post-defeat of an opponent. Why, after an intense fire storm, does a human remain fully clothed and skin as white as the moon?

This is, admittedly, my first TES game experience... not sure if it was different in previous games... either way, I'm loving Skyrim so far.

What do you guys think??

I hardly care either way. I certainly wouldn't scrap a character due to not having visual bells and whistles.

Well I have to admit that I expected that if I slice and dice my opponent that I'd actually see the wounds, but instead I just see some blood spurts.

Still, it doesn't take away enough from the game to make it unenjoyable. In fact I'm having a blast other than the UI, lack of companion commands, and a couple other things that I hope they will fix and or enhance.

Actually, it is a bit odd that I get the full brunt of a dragon breathing fire on me, my entire screen goes bright orange, and when it's done, my hair isn't even smoking. That does seem a bit odd.

I think your too obsessed with graphics. And there are post effects in the form of perks. And physics? In an ES? You really are new.

You should have kept on playing.
At a certain point you can get perks which will make enemies on fire run away screaming (even off of cliffs sometimes which is damn hilarious)
frozen enemies become covered in frost and paralyzed
and electrocuted enemies turn to a pile of ash
Theres also a shout that causes enemies to become blocks of ice that can be tipped over.
Yea so...keep on playing that character, the effects will arrive...with time...young one.
EDIT: oh and if the fire spell is strong enough, you can burn parts of a dragonpriests robes

Ok,

I

What do you guys think??

I think it will take about a year post the creation kit release (if they do that)
to fix this game up in the manner many of us were actually thinking the game would be.

That is what I think.

So, just shelve it for now and play Angry Birds or read a book?

Oh yeah?? Well, I haven't scrapped it yet... what you're describing here is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for... I've got the augmented frost perk 1 of 2... will I start seeing something by 2 of 2? Or not until the perk above that?

It is a console game, so what I expected was pretty much what I got.
Oblivion with new content and some graphic improvement.
The Ressources they could use were limited to the Hardware available somewhere in the middle of the last last decade.
Dont get me wrong though, Iam not dissappointed and like the game a lot, exept for the UI, dont know why they kept the simplified console version for the PC portation.

Nope, it's not about graphics... it's more about seeing tangible results from the use of magic.

I wanna FEEL the magic's power! ...as of now I just feel like I'm running around and holding two mouse buttons together the odd time... the spells don't feel like they're making a huge impact

Well these are some of the last perks you will get in the destruction tree, so start training them or visiting trainers so you can get the effects you want

check the discriptions of the pek, i believe it the ones that show physical effects like freezing and ashing and setting on fire are the ones after the +25/50% perks

Yeah, you're right. I guess I'll wait until I get those perks and see how I feel about it... anyone who has those perks satisfied with the effect?

Oh most definitely!
Trust me, screaming bandits on fire running off of cliffs like madmen is extremely enjoying.

Magic isn't cool enough, though for me it has nothing to do with visuals. I miss all the cool effects magic used to have, i miss spell making which can fix the screw ups of the spell design from bethesda, but visuals not so much. I am disappointed that we gave up a lot of cool stuff for mediocre visuals though.

everyone is telling the OP to not be obsessed with graphics... someone bump this thread when the major selling point of Elder Scrolls 6 is how bodies will be charred after being hit with fire, ect

The SR magic system looks very nice when compared to OB.

Other than that....it svcks.

The lack of spellmaking or suitable substitute puts the SR magic system lightyears behind previous TES.
