[REQ] Remove perks

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:30 am

Reading through the general forum for the past few hours I see a strange resemblance between itself and the... let's say... WoW forums. Everyone seems to be complaining about the balance issues to do with perks and personally I think the game would be better of without them. To compensate for this change I think there needs to be a LOT more weapons/armour with a progressively higher stats; possibly by taking advantage of the dungeon system?

Smithing (for example) should have all armour and weapon recipes readily available to everyone. The components to make those high end armours should be REALLY hard to obtain, which brings me to my next point; dragons should be harder to kill than frost trolls? It should take someone like 50-100 retries to kill them, which in turn drops a few components to make dragon armour, which should be far more powerful than Daedric armour (which can be looted unlike dragon armour).

I have a million suggestions but I'll leave it at that for now, as those are my main concerns.

So you propose to remove perks by simply having all of them? (at least for blacksmithing)

I was literally seconds away from starting to create this thread myself.

I'm not sure how many people agree but personally, having played both Morrowind and Oblivion which give you the ability to acquire EVERY skill in the game so long as you put the effort in, then having Skyrim throw up this huge limitation they ripped from MW called "perks" really gets to me. I would have no problem with this sort of thing so long as it adds to the game but it doesn't all it does it adds a limit to the game that doesn't have to be there.

I would be really happy if someone could create a mod that ether removes perks from the game completely, or automatically adds a perk when you have to skill level to acquire it normally, I would even be happy if the mod made levelling up skills take longer.

Edit: Yes, I know there is a console command to add perks manually, but a mod to do that for me would be nice.

No I think things like alchemy, enchanting (apart from the souls part), gathering, smithing, woodcutting etc are a good part of the game and RPG element but just don't need that skilling up factor, and can easily do without.

So it's not removing but automatic gain that you want. That makes more sense. I guess it can be made with some basic scripting:
when you reach 20 point in this skills
add to player the perk related to the skill.

Should be easy enough.

I'd like to see you have to train to get them. "Buy" them, the way you bought training in Morrowind and Daggerfall. It's not automatic, but if you want them, you can get them all, logically, in game with some effort.

A simpler solution to do the same might be to create Skill Books for each Perk, then give them to the skill trainers for each Skill, charge something like (Skill Level Required2). So the books would cost something like:
Level 20 Skill = 400
Level 50 Skill = 2,500
Level 75 Skill = 5,625
Level 100 Skill = 10,000
If done that way you wouldn't need to find a way around the perk system itself, but it will still allow every perk to be available.

I agree with OP. Leveling skills used to be much more organic. Get better at alchemy skill? Then your potions are automatically stronger. Instead of having to spend perks to make them stronger. Unless you pick the perks in that skill to make them stronger, there's almost no point in raising many skills in Skyrim now. It's a much less organic leveling system.
