Skyrim caused my PS3 to fail terminally

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 9:44 am

After being a keen Oblivion/Fallout fan I was very keen to play Skyrim, it started well but at around level 27 I started to notice more lag issues. Then when zoning into a village the PS3 just switched off with a blinking red light. I restarted going through the usual repair process and the same thing happened again after reloading my save, in fact each time I tried it seemed to happen more quickly after the save loading. So i moved to an earlier save and the same thing started to happen. Then before I knew it, the PS3 starting switching itself off whilst in the home PS3 menus. I called Sony support and they advised a safe mode repair followed by a rebuild, and now the machine has got itself in a rebuild cycle where it switches off before completing it each time. It is now in a completely failed state and I am without doubt that the root cause lies with the stress on the hardware caused by Skyrim. The model is an older model 40GB PS3.

I am extremely frustrated as I think the game apart from these major issues is excellent, but to have released the game in this state with so many PS3 users experiencing major problems with their consoles as a result is frankly disgusting. Any advice is appreciated...

Sorry to hear. Used to play games, but took skyrim to the PS3.

Honestly though, I blame the console designers for there issues of not socketing their chips when games really heat up the system.

Sorry to hear this. Not the first report like this on the forum. Whilst I have heard this happen with other games also, it seems Skyrim has a major issue with this. I do appreciate that game's shouldn't break hardware, but at the same time it does seem more than a coincidence that multiple people are reporting PS3's bricked after a Skyrim crash.

That's just bad luck mate. One thing people should do when the PS3 crashes is to leave it for an hour. Let the system cool down. Might prevent these sort of accidents.

Yes, but it does seem logical, IMO, to leave it be for a while. At least that's what I do if my PS3 crashes. Never gives me trouble when I turn it on again later. Not hardcoe proof but still logical in my book.

Ps3 rarely overheat during a crash, maybe leading up to one. Switch it on right away and it works just as well. In fact residual heat soak from letting any hardware cool down without a fan can do more damage. If you restart right away you are letting the fans do their job. And I thought yours never crashed?

I'm not talking about the crashes itself but several crashes rapidly after another causing the console to break.

It just sounds like the PS3 has served its time. Only to be expected of an old fat model.. Happened to me recently too :(

You know, I used to think this too, but I have been on many many many video game support forums over the years and this is the first time that THIS many reports of fried consoles playing a game have come in. Sure, it happens from time to time, but when you start having this many occurences you have to start to see a pattern.

Possibly, But, I have have a launch model that didn't miss a beat til' Skyrim, but my neighbour has a 6 mth old thin PS3 that didn't miss a beat til' Skyrim.
And quite a few others also with differing models.

Thanks, I shall endeavor to place it with the others that you are generating.

Heard of, even PC is known not to work if it shuts down from an error and you wanna turn it on right away, instead of leaving it to cool down and then turn it on. Sometimes it might not even want to turn on for soem time. Another thing that can break the thing is if you had it in a backpack outside of the house and you turn it on right away without leaving it to reach the temperature close of the room's (such as when it's very cold outside, you need to let the console get a bit warmer or something migth snap).

On another note, ps3 is generally a very unstable console and is known to shut down on it's own and even break completely for no reason whatsoever, not just with Skyrim. I had this myself with games such as MGS4, Resistance, FF13, Dead Space, AC etc etc. It's probably the fact that Skyrim is a heavy burden for the console because of it's bad optimisation that makes this happen sooner, especially if your console is old.

As i said my Ps3 is a launch model. I'm on my fourth 360 (Look up unstable :ermm: ). I look after my possessions very carefully and clean them regularly.
My PS3 is working fine and regularly plays MGS4 & Resistance without issue as long as I don't Play Skyrim.

as much as arguments come in saying skyrim cant possible damage the PS3 for me its starting to look like a big maybe it can.
PS3 is just a computer constant hard crashes aren't good for any computer.
that and has someone pointed how usually on every game theres reports of it broke my console but skyrim does appear to have more reports of it then most other games i really dont know only way to really see if it is the case is take the statistics of how many people who have skyrim have ended up with a fried PS3 after playing skyrim compared to the usual amount of fried PS3 and amount of fried PS3 reported on each game made for it which would take a lot fo work and never be accurate cause itd be impossible to do it world wide
