Skyrim Seriously Unbalanced?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:26 pm

I love TES games but they all seem to have this thing in common. I hope Bethesda realizes this if they ever think of making a MMO.

:D
I hope they never ruin this series by turning it into an MMO...

When the game becomes too easy its broken, no longer a challenge, and no longer fun. Boredom sets in and its off to the next game

I don’t see this as a valid complaint.

One, this game isn’t multiplayer so it’s not like you’re having to deal with this during a PvP session.

Two, it’s not like your forced to craft 100 Iron Daggers then enchant them and get to 100 smithing and enchanting in 1 hour.
I respect your opinion, so don’t take this as me bashing it. I’m just saying if you enchant items and make armor at a rate that makes sense it will easily add multiple hours of gameplay to your experience, Instead of grinding it out in an hour or so. People who go and make 10,000 Iron daggers are just ruining themselves. They will be the ones getting to lvl 50 and having terrible fighting and armor attributes due to the fact that they have leveled so many times off of enchanting and smithing.

I dont exploit the game doing this at all. I just want the game experience to be the best possible.

Its curious people dont want a game to be balanced.

Yeah...it'll turn you to god mode....IF YOU SPEND HOURS MAKING IRON DAGGERS. You are purposely unbalancing the game.

I spent little time getting my blacksmithing up.. just when i had the iron and strips i would make them, nothing else I could make of use! I had good armor and weapons!

Lol speaking of this subject i just remembered when i would pump magic resist potions, put on the boots of blinding speed and get no blinding effect, then turn into a werewolf nad then i could just run and jump from Gnisis to Ald Ruhn. Fun times!

Luckily, if you don't power-level/exploit/abuse the crafting skills, the game isn't too easy or broken. Like I said - I've been raising those skills at a "normal" pace at best. I've got some slightly improved crafted armor and weapons (just a couple pieces, I've found better loot for the other equipment slots), and higher-rank enemies give me a good workout.

But, then, I've never felt "forced" to use boring powergaming moves. Just like I've never felt forced to open the console and type "tgm".

I really don't see anything to "fix" here. If you find 100% Chameleon in Oblivion to be "boring", don't do it. It's pretty easy not to, considering the lengths you have to go to in order to get that level of gear.

Same with Smithing in Skyrim - power-leveling it to 100 doesn't just happen... you have to choose to do it and make a deliberate effort. If you think it's unbalanced and broken, there's no one with a gun to your head making it happen.

I conducted a test the other day, I made a new character, and advskilled the three crafting skills to max level. I recieved enough perks from these levels to apply all the perks I needed for "perfect crafting." I used the console to add in the crafting materials I needed. Without going into too much detail, I then crafted the best suit of daedric armour, shield, and sword that I could. I applied +heavy armour, and +one handed enchantments to as much of the gear as possible.

I had something on the order of 780 armour value, and 140 attack.

I then reloaded, went to the same character, used advskill to put Heavy Armour, Block, and One Handed to 100. I recieved enough perks to get "perfect" in these skills. I then used console to add daedric armour, sword, and a shield.

After equipping, 380 armour, 40 attack.

Obviously, even the "perfect warrior" character would apply basic weapon/gear enchants, but still, the difference here is staggering. Going pure crafting is nearly 100% superior than focusing on the skills. Not to mention the versatility (the crafter could just as easily create stealth gear, or casting gear).

The issue is that the difference here is 100% improvement. I would be fine if it was even just 50% better. 100% is simply too much.

That isn't the issue, the quote above explains what the issue is.

I think they've honestly let stay in game in purpose just like the "giant cannon" thing. It easy to avoid if you want and overall just gives some flavor in the game. Alchemy abuse was pretty fun in Morrowind too.
Balancing shouldn't be main goal in SP games as long as all paths are viable.

Nobody else in Skyrim knows how to upgrade weapons or armor

This is the problem

Well if you wanna break the gamebe my guest.
No one forced you to have auto regen health/magicka/fatigue in morrowind.
No one forced you to duplicate items in Oblivion.
And no one is forcing you to power level the crafting skills.
You don't see me rubberbanding while sneaking to get my way to 100 even though you can.
It's the players choice to treat a VIDEO GAME more like a CHORE.
I never even knew about that perfect leveling crap in Oblivion.
Just play the game, it ain't a competition.

I'm sorry, but no, that's wrong.

We've had these threads over and over - it's not just smithing, and not just powerleveling.

Simple, ordinary use of skills, using them as designed will break the game, and not just a few of them, either.

Conjuration, Illusion, Sneak, and frankly, Enchantment even without purposeful abuse all break the game. For that matter, the game is total easy mode with just basic smithing and using a warrior of any type.

Destruction is sort of a wildcard, because the stagger effect is OP, but the whole school is weak without it... since you can staggerlock just about anything, though, and that's pretty much the only way you can use the school, using it as intended basically means staggerlocking enemies to death. So you can include it, as well.

Any time someone talks about how broken one skill is, and how little fun the game is because of it, other people tell you to shut up because you should just play a different type of character.

I would like to just like to quote the Steam ad for the game, here:
LIVE ANOTHER LIFE, IN ANOTHER WORLD

Play any type of character you can imagine, and do whatever you want; the legendary freedom of choice, storytelling, and adventure of The Elder Scrolls is realized like never before.

Except that, yeah, we're not allowed to play any sort of character at all, really, without breaking the game balance. Any sort of magic specialization other than purely relying upon Alteration and Restoration is OP, warriors are OP, and rogues are OP... mmmhmmm... That's not "powergrinding" or anything, either, that's simply declaring that you're playing as a mage, and just using magic as a solution to all your problems, exactly the way you would expect a mage to do. It should be a surprise to nobody that such a path results in quickly gaining skills in just that focused set of skills.

Then they say that they like having their characters just be godmode, which frankly, seems to be the truth of the matter - people who want to enjoy the game for a challenge are just not welcome in playing Bethesda games.

I think that Bethesda knows many players love to achieve God Mode in their TES games and I think they deliberately make it possible for players. I really which their patches would try for just a tiny bit of balance

Playing the game as it is, it's balanced well enough.

Spending a ridiculous amount of time grinding certain skills and powergaming everything makes it unbalanced.

You know, kind of like how in Oblivion you could level up your skills to the max at level one without ever sleeping so you never went past level one, but had ridiculously powered skills?

Yeah.

The only people I currently hear complaining about crafting are mages. I found out like the second day that I had Skyrim that enchanting could make your damage skyrocket when I found an Iron helm that gave me +20% damage boost. This was my first TES game and friends of mine are asking me for tips on maxing out their DPS. I've already maxed my duel weilding swords and bows to the maximum possible damage in the game, and all it took was a few hours of crafting. Even master diffuclty is a breeze now, excluding master mages and ancient dragons.

Anyhow, I LOVE my Rogue, and my advice is this; if you don't like it, don't use it. You aren't forced to max out your crafting gear. If Skyrim was an MMO, I could see this being a power issue, but it isn't. It's a single player game and you are free to create a god-like character if you so choose.

I love the game. I'm not complaining about the game. It's a great game. But it is also seriously unbalanced. It's not ruining my fun or anything, but I would prefer it if they patched it so that crafting was less unbalancing. You don't even have to use the recursive loop to break it. Just having a reasonably high smithing + max enchanting and making a +smithing enchanted set for crafting and popping a potion you find in a chest somewhere is enough to make gear that makes powerful enemies trivial at master difficulty (which is what I'm playing on). If that doesn't bother you, fine. But it does seem like a legitimate complaint and something that ideally should be addressed in a patch.

(and to address the poster above me, i'm playing as a rogue, not a mage. just a rogue who finds that he can suddenly tank everything in the game.)

Just got Enchanting to 100, ended up with a set of armour that gave me a 100% reduction in Restoration, as well as +75 Light Armour, +80% One Handed Damage, +62 Stamina and +40% Bow Damage. (Which is incredibly lousy compared to what can be achieved with Enchanting/Alchemy/Smithing to be honest.)

I didn't grind the hell out of it or anything, I just enchanted all my loot after a quest, then bought more empty soul gems, then started another quest. Started off doing it just to make money.

Not complaining though, obviously. I'm not really all that bothered at all. But yeah, I'd say the skills weren't exactly even, Pickpocket and Lockpicking in particular should probably be merged into Sneak or something really.
