Skyrim PC - Xbox 360 wireless controller support Help

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 6:09 am

Background info: I have Skyrim for the PC, I do use the Nexus Mod Manager to implement mods into the game. I have a Wireless PC receiver for my Xbox 360 controller. The controller works with my other PC games: GTA 4, Fallout 3, etc.

My problem is that I the game is unresponsive to my controller. It will not work in the menu or game. Is there a file you have to have to implement the controller? Does the fact I use the Nexus Mod Manager have any affect on the game files of controller support? Does anyone know where the controller support files are or where I could find them for this game?
If it also helps, I don't have Skyrim installed with the "Games for Windows Live" thing, I wonder if that might have something to do with it.

Thanks for any help.

Most games have native support for the controller these days, especially when multi-platform. It may be the case that you are correct and that Skyrim may indeed require GFWL active to support the pad, though imo thats unlikely.

All i can tell you is that i use a wired 360 controller, and it worked without having to do anything.

Did you go into the Skyrim game settings and click the setting that activates the xbox controller?

I've been using my wireless xbox 360 controllers with Skyrim with no problem at all. I have the wireless receiver connected to a powered USB hub, because the PC's built-in usb ports don't supply enough power for the wireless receiver. Maybe you need a powered USB hub. Skyrim PC works with steam. I don't think it has anything to do with Microsoft's Windows Live service.

It should be a pretty much plug and play. I am playing with a wired Afterglow / 360 controller. From day one. I just plugged into the USB and it took off. Skyrim is set up to work with the controller. I don't see why wireless should be any different. I know this was absolutely no help what so ever.

Have you tried changing control method in the settings section of the pause screen? There's a little icon that specifies whether you want to use a 360 controller or not, try toggling it maybe?

With the Wireless Controller, you have to have the Xbox Wireless Receiver plugged in and the proper drivers installed. Otherwise it will not work.

Even then, a small percentage of the folks can not get their wireless to work right.

The Wired controller does not have these issues.

Both of these had the right solution. I was unaware there was a switch between keyboard -> controller button. (all the games I play automatically recognize)

Thanks for everyone's time and help.

By default, it should recognize the Controller. However, most people uncheck that box when using the Keyboard/Mouse as it gives better response.
