Texture Issue Caused By Certain 360 Models

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 9:33 pm

Like many of you, I have been having ridiculously low textures in Skyrim.

I have played Skyrim installed to my HDD and from the disc, yet I still get horrible textures.

However, I made two interesting discoveries.

Whenever I would load a game save, at first, everything looked more or less okay. But when I went through any menus by pressing B, everything got worse, especially my character's hands.

Also, a friend of mine who I'm talking to ATM has said he's got Skyrim installed on his HDD and is having no low textures whatsoever. I probed deeper into this mystery and discovered something. He has an older XB360 model (original Pro model) and I have a newer XB360 model (Slim Kinect ready model).

It seems to me that this issue depends on which XB360 model you are using.

I hope it's a slim problem (sorry slim users :P)... I'm using an arcade from around '09 I think.

I've got the original pro, and I'm still having the texture issue...

Please do.

The more people who confirm the issue is due to certain XB360 models, the sooner Bethesda can figure out a solution.

I've got the original pro, and I'm still having the texture issue...

Well, then I guess my theory is dead in the water.

I guess there is no common factor for the texture issue. People on different XB360 models using different methods to play are all experiencing the issue.

I hope Bethesda figures this out and fixes it SOON.

I have a 2 months old Xbox 360 slim with 250gb and all textures (walls, trees, stones...) look awful. And I am usually in the 'graphics don't matter to me'-camp but I almost fell off my chair when I first saw them... It felt like playing Quake or something...

this has to be a bug and I really hope there will be a fix soon.

btw: was playing from disc, will install on hdd later to see if there's a difference

I have an older non-slim and I am probably getting Skyrim today. I will see if I have any problems playing off the disc. If I do, I will try installing it to the HDD.

I will let you guys know what happens.

Assuming that the textures are really just references to bump-map/image files on the HDD/disc, one possibility could be that Bethesda used unsafe/inconsistent addressing techniques for loading these textures and/or bad cache/memory management practices. It's also possible that the reason Bethesda didn't pick this up sooner is because different generations/models of the 360 may have different motherboard models/firmware levels, each which may handle this specific method of addressing/memory management differently. This could explain why the problem does not appear to be localized to a single xbox model or method of gameplay.

But then again I'm not a 360 developer by any means, I'm merely just speculating  .

I played for 3 hours when I got home from the GS release and did not install. However I just got up and am installing to the HDD right now. I have a 360 S 4gig version with an added 250gig HDD. I'll let you guys know what happened with it.

I think this issue is intermittent regardless of what xbox model you have or how you run the game. For me I've run the game from the disk and its been fine for a while and then the textures issue occurs and installing the hard drive, again, starts off fine but then again shows low textures after a while but then they come back in both circumstances. This isn't an issue that can be resolved by any of the means suggested, imo, and is something we're just going to have to wait for Bethesda to patch. Personally I can live with it as not all textures are affected and if it werent for these forum posts I wouldnt have even noticed in the first place. Its not a game breaker so I think we should all man up and live with it for now!

I've found that I get it every time I bring up the quest or inventory menu screens and then exiting out of it. Only resolution I've found is to quit back to main menu then select Load and select a previous save. Unfortunately the issue occurs again when you bring up the quest or inventory menus. However this issue is hardly noticeable unless your an anol [censored] bucket!

I have played direct from disc for 8 hours with no noticeable texture issues. However, in the hope of extending the life of the cheap DVD players MS put in the Xbox (I have already had one xbox DVD drive die due to wear and tear and hence now having the new xbox slim) I tried installing to HD. Result? Horrible low res textures loading only. Had to uninstall from HD. May try tomorrow installing to USB

Got elite from 09, was all good till I installed it, now it's installed I get low textures everywhere. Lucky I'm not a massive graphics freak so I can play anyway, but it really svcks to pay for a game with bugs.

It is such a large - and highly reported issue - I would have to agree. It is very difficult to see how this could have been missed during beta testing

Really enjoying the game but have decided to shelve it until the patch comes out.
I prefer to play with it installed.
