Textures scaling down when not installed on HDD

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 6:58 pm

I had the infamous texture scaling issue when installing Skyrim to my hard drive, and promptly uninstalled it. Patch 1.2 didn't fix this problem, as i thought it would, but seems to have exacerbated it. Now the textures continue to remain scaled down, even though i'm running the game off of the disc, and not on my hard drive. Anyone else with a similar problem?

Didn't fix the problem for me on HDD, or off disc. The best I find is off a USB, However, low-res textures do remain even on here.

I don't have the game installed in any way, shape or form, I'm just running it the standard way off of the disc. Still, a large portion of the scenery is blocky and textures are frequently downscaled

I have the exact same problem and it's basically put the final nail in the coffin for me. I never installed the game in the first place and I wasn't having this problem at all until the new 1.2 patch. Now I am having the problem big time and I can't get rid of it. I tried to install the game to see if maybe the problem would go away but it didn't.

Bethesda; please fix this issue. More than half of the total sales of Skyrim are xbox 360 copies. Do you really want the majority of the people who own the game to potentially see it looking worse than Oblivion?

Not only that but it's in their interest to have us buying all their wonderful DLC.

Also to the poster above a USB will fix a lot of the textures but not by any means all of them.

Same here. Installed to HDD after patch 1.2 but the textures, as you said, were terrible, so I reverted back to playing off the disc. Still awful.

So galling when you've seen what it's SUPPOSED to look like. If this remains, I don't think I can go back to it. So sad because I think its the best game ever made.

I'm not going back to it until there's a fix. It's too frustrating.

Me too. I bought Arkham City a couple of days before Skyrim and never really had the chance to get into it because Skyrim hijacked my life. I think this is the week I finally get into that game. Also I might have an opportunity to salvage my relationship with my gf (Skyrim hijacked that too).

Haha, I warned my gf beforehand that Skyrim would take over a large portion of my time. She accepted it, heck, she's even playing herself.

I never thought I'd have been shelving Skyrim anytime soon, but it's the only option for me until its fixed.

I'm with you guys on this. It absolutely ruins the game and I hate when people try to minimize it with comments like, "you can still play."

I really hope they acknowledge one of these threads, I want to know how aware of this they are. People having texture issues off-disc was never supposed to happen, but it happened to me 3 days before the last patch hit the servers. Clearing my cache/installing to a HDD or USB stick doesn't work at all. The only way I can get any improvement is to upgrade to 1.2, which isn't an improvement so much as I can see SOME fine grass texture again at the extent of breaking my game further. Rocks still look plastic and shiny, armor and weapons still lack detail, and more often than not 1/3 of my character's hands will be low-res while the other 2/3 of the arm renders somewhat better. Anything covered in snow or moss is a pixelated blob. Everything looks REALLY bad up close. The contrast in textures with 1.2 makes the game look worse, not better for me. And does anyone know for sure if they lowered the draw distance in 1.2? To me it feels like it, but I honestly can't remember playing this game without extra-lite graphics now.
