The birds of Skyrim

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:45 pm

I was wandering around Skyrim the other day, when I was surprised to hear the distinctive call of the Mountain Chickadee ("Cheese-bur-ger"*) in the background. I didn't see the bird, but the song is unmistakeable. I'm sure I must have heard this in the game dozens of times previously, but it had never registered consciously before. That got me thinking - if I just noticed this call, what other real-life bird songs might be present in Skyrim?

Has anybody heard any that they recognize?

*Seriously, the Mountain Chickadee's call really does sound like that. Google it! :)

I have heard bird songs in the game before, but not being a birder, I can't recognize what sound goes with what bird.

The only birds I've noticed are those giant ones flying above Solitude. I managed to kill one of them, but it was dark and I couldn't find its body after it fell.

I'm not really a birder either, but I took an ornithology class last year, so I know a little. :)

You can kill these birds? I always though they are just randomly thingys flying around and not actually creatures.

Yeah, I was on the highest tower in Solitude and shot one with my Nightingale Bow. I saw it fall, but when I went and looked for its body I couldn't find it. I'm assuming thats where Hawk feathers come from.

You can knock the hawks out of the sky with any spell (including a calm spell). And can kill butterflies with arrows.

I saw an interview with Mark Lampert, Sound Designer on Skyrim where he talked about recording birds and even the sound of his wife walking away. My favorite in Skyrim is the Woodpecker because I can hear those outside my window in the summer too. Great job, Mark.

They also nest in the trees too! I had to climb up and get above them to see it.

Nice to know the sounds are realistic...

My mage regularly zaps hawks out of the Solitude sky with his lightning bolt spell. The feathers are very useful. Like lightweight Cure Disease potions.

That is kind of cool. I mean, if there were no nests in the trees, I doubt anyone would have noticed that. But, since they put nests in, and it 's a game where we can't climb, makes me wonder what other goodies are up in those out of the way places we can't get to.....

A friend of mine killed a hawk with an arrow. We didn't believe our eyes...

OP - I do recognize some bird sounds in Skyrim as coming from real-life birds. I don't know enough to identify them, but it is a nice touch to be wandering around and hearing the occasional call.

Better then the most games, which take them from sound plattforms. I know so many games with the same ambient sound ;)

Well I have to clarify that I had climbed up the side of a mountain and was clmibing back down when I saw a bird and was about to shoot it when I saw it stopped and sit on a nest.

I was impressed by that since it`s such a little detail that few would notice.

Hmm, I've seen big scaly birds, with fire and frost breath, they don't sing, but they yell...just kidding. I've heard a lot of birds, but seeing as I don't study birds, I can't match each sound with the correct bird.
