Unreadable Text

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:07 pm

The text in Oblivion was alrdy small but still readable. But with Skyrim I find it nigh impossible to navigate the menu because the print is so damn small. Dialogue text is very hard to read as well, but not as impossible as the menu text is. I litterly had to stand an inch away from my tv set to decipher the words onscreen with the help of the manual. Icons are also terribly small to make out, both in the nav bar on top of the screen as well as the button icons (X, Y, A, B, LS, RS, RB, LB). Also I've found that parts of the screen are being cut off on the left and the right side of the screen. I'm not visually impared, mind you. Is there a way to get a clearer and bigger font into the game?

Otherwise it's a great game and the texture thing will get fixed anyway :)

PS No, I don't own a 42" HD tv, I have to make due with a normal tv.

Unfortunately this is a known issue for SD TV users and Bethesda have said they're not planning on making the game more SD-friendly.

then we're gonna keep complaining and sending e-mails until we get a more favorable answer.

if you develop for a plattform that allows sd tv gaming then you have to damn well make sure to take the SD tv user fanbase into account.
until a plattform that only allows HD tvs exclusively that is how you have to do things.

Not a problem. I posted it another thread too.

We apologise that you are experiencing a text issue in the game, it is unfortunate that this has happened, and I can assure you that Bethesda are working as fast as they can to send out an update to fix this error.

We appreciate your support for the game in being one of the first to purchase it, and we hope that this issue is resolved swiftly for the likes of people like youself.

People like myself are people with SD TV's which I had told her I am aware are the problem. (Bad grammar, sorry)

I have a large screen TV and my son and I are both having difficulty reading any text. In Oblivion the text was dark brown on a light brown background. With Skyrim the text is white on black and much smaller. I have no idea if there is a way to enlarge the text or not but I'm getting eye strain after 30 minutes of play. Any help or a patch would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I made an account just now because I wanted to reply to this issue haha.

Well my friend I completely understand your issue!!!! Not with this game because I have an HDTV.

But if we go back in time before Nov 1st 2011 we will find myself in the same boat as you. Before I got an HDTV I had a standard def 22 inch TV and every single game I played had awful text my friend... I always got annoyed with it and even if my face was half an inch from the screen I still could not read the text.

If your on a standard def TV you may want to go into system settings on your Xbox dashboard and make sure the video settings are set to standard def. If your on a standard def TV with the settings set to HDMI the picture will actually be more blurry than if it was set to a lower quality.

Other than that I cant really help you. I bought a 24 inch LCD 1080 HDTV for not to bad of price. I also have a 46 inch plasma HD but I only use that for netflix/DVD's because I cant game on a massive TV for some odd reason lmfao...

So yeah best bet imo is save up for an HDTV. It does not have to be a 100 inch. A 20 inch HDTV is good enough IMO. If you end up buying an HDTV I urge you to go to system settings on the Xbox dashboard and switch the settings to HD otherwise the picture will still be crap.

Best of luck friend... Game dev's often ignore the people who are suffering in the worlds awful economy and cant afford big bad ass TV's which is kinda sad imo.

Sounds like a form letter to me.... I also have a 37" Toshiba SD TV, and can BARELY make out text.

Indeed, sounds like a form letter. But hey, I'm still going to hold them to this, lying bastards. They send one email that says "No we're not working on it" and another that says they are. Which is true?
And were you asking them about the small text or the screen cutoff? Because I would say the latter is more important.

Sorry Verninon. I did forget to mention the cut off as I fixed my own by changing the X-Box to widescreen and my TV to 16:9 format. It did not fix the text but everything fits into the screen now. So anyways. After reading the email about Bethesda saying they were not going to fixt the problem I emailed Francesca again saying how I found out that they were not fixing it. She sent me this back:

Hello,

If you feel that your game is not working correctly, you are entitled to a replacement copy with your retailer, if you still have your proof of purchase.

Bethesda have been investigating issues such as the one that you mentioned, and I apologise that they have said that they will not be handling your particular problem at the moment.

Can you please inform me of which platform you are playing on? If it is the PC version, we could have a look at your system for you and see if there is anything that would help resolve your issue.

I linked her to this topic so she could see how many people are complaining about it.

Awesome, thanks for posting and emailing all that. Here's hoping they know about the screen cut off and are doing something about it because this is affecting a lot of people, myself included. I cannot see my compass or the text in the top left at all. I emailed them about it a couple days ago but have yet to see a response.

See the "unplayable on sdtv" topic for an eight page discussion on this.

Well, I assume you could also run a X-Box 360 with a monochrome TV set ^^.

But I know where you going, a year ago I was also gaming on a SD-TV. Skyrim is not the only game with this issue, though.

I'm up in my age and my eyes are old your right I can't even read the words I guess you're force to buy the guide book.
