Useless Junk Items List

Post » Sun Feb 13, 2011 10:37 pm

I have been trying to develop a list of items that can be deemed completely "useless" in New Vegas; that it, they are only good for the cap/s you can get for selling them.

I am a real pack rat and will keep anything and everything that I might/will someday need. However what I really want is to know categorically what items are nothing more than junk so that I can sell them immediately and keep my inventory and storage tidy and my caps high.

I realise it is easy to identify which items are needed for crafting recipes (see link below) but some items are needed for quests, side quests or minor requirments across the Mojave throughout the game.
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_crafting

Please note: this list refers to Fallout: New Vegas only; some of these items are useful/required in Fallout 3.

I will keep updating the list below if people can contribute by either telling me how an item on the list is not only junk or adding other things that are useless in New Vegas:

Here is what I have as "useless" items so far.

  • 10 Ball
  • 13 Ball
  • 2 Ball
  • 5 Ball
  • 8 Ball
  • Acoustic Guitar (Unique Item)
  • Ashtray
  • Baseball
  • Baseball Glove
  • Bent Tin Can*
  • Bonesaw
  • Butter Knife
  • Camera
  • Carton of Cigarettes (Used in Dead Money)

  • Counterfeit Bottle Caps
  • Crutch
  • Cue Ball
  • Cup
  • Damaged Garden Gnome
  • Dinner Plate
  • Dog Bowl
  • Drinking Glass
  • Earnings Clipboard
  • Empty Nuka-Cola Bottle
  • Empty Sunset Sarsaparilla Bottle
  • Empty Whiskey Bottles
  • Evil Gnome
  • Finance Clipboard
  • Firehose Nozzle*
  • Food Sanitizer
  • Fork
  • Glass Pitcher (x2 needed for a recipe but they are not expended and thus reusable; store two, sell the rest!)
  • Green Plate
  • Hammer
  • Harmonica
  • Hot Plate
  • Intact Garden Gnome
  • Iron
  • Large Burned Book
  • Large Destroyed Book
  • Large Ruined Book

  • Sheet Music Book (Unique Item)
  • Shot glass
  • Small Burned Book
  • Small Destroyed Book
  • Small Ruined Book
  • Small Scorched Book
  • Spatula
  • Steam Guage Assembly*
  • Sunset Sarsaparilla Deputy Badge*
  • Teddy Bear
  • Tin Plate
  • Toaster
  • Toy Car
  • Triangle
  • Tweezers
  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Whet Stone
  • White Plate
  • Wood Chipper

*Item has a limited use for a side-quest but is not required for the quest's completion: ie; Issac at Gun Runners requires 100 pieces of scrap at one point, where Tin Cans or Bent Tin Cans count as such scrap pieces, though they are otherwise useless and you can use other items such as Scrap Metal to meet the requirement.

Hope this list helps! Please reply if anything is wrong/missing or if you have any comments/ideas!

Note: let me know if there are any spelling errors too; I have written the list out in full so users can search easily in their browser!

Aren't hammers and wrenches part of weapon repair kit recipes?

Boxes of detergent can be used to make Rocket at campfires and to make homemade flamer fuel.

Tin cans are used in making powder charges (once you have the schematic) and can also be used to make Rose's Wasteland Omelet (once you obtain the recipe).

Tweezers are not used for any recipes.

Firehose Nozzle has a minor quest associated with it (needed 2 I think)....cook, camp mccarran. But not needed if you have a very high repair, kinda like the tin cans.

Cigarettes and Pre-war Money are worth some pretty decent caps.

Spoiler
It's true that caps aren't much of an issue once you've reached New Vegas and can start breaking the casinos, but at the start of the game you want to collect at least 2,000 so you can get onto the Strip, and the smokes and the old $100 bills are very helpful for getting you there.

Great, thanks for the contributions so far. I have removed Box of Detergent from the list (my error), marked Firehose Nozzle as a non-required minor quest item and crossed through Carton of Cigarettes based on them being used in the Dead Money expansion.

I hadn't found the Anti Materiel Rifle; is this definately good for nothing other than caps?

Also, I realise Sheet Music is a misc. unique item but does this mean it is still not "useless", ie: just worth selling, or do you need it for something?
Either that or should the Acoustic Guitar be added to the list? (I have not found this item).

To my knowledge neither have a purpose other than being unique (I like them both and don't get rid of them but they don't do anything).

Acoustic guitar should be added.

It's between Novac and the 188 in the possession of a man with a cool little story. He also has a unique weapon and IIRC his armour is unique? The guitar is not in his inventory, it's resting against something nearby (a tree stump I think...)

Brilliant, thanks, I have added Acoustic Guitar to the list.

I'm sure I remember seeing this but could not take it...

Is he the same guy you can hire as entertainment for The Tops Casino? If so, both him and his guitar disappeared after I did anyway.

Spoiler
Indeed he is. I know you can recruit him for the quest with or without the guitar (I stole it and put it in the Lucky 38 and he was still ok to join the Tops) but I don't know if he takes it with him otherwise...

I've never had a problem acquiring it!

Cigarettes can be used in a mod, though its doesn't have much use other than raising your AP and seeing a cigarette in your mouth.

Toy Car

Abraxo Cleaner is used to clean the Cosmic Knife.
Conductor is used in Dead Money for something I forgot. (That's why they put the Conductor in the DLC in the first place, so you can use it)

You forgot Sunset Sarsaparilla Deputy Badge, Yeast, BoS Holotag, and Steam Guage Assembly.

Yeast (and Mutfruit & Maize & the battery)) is used in Cass' Moonshine.
Steam gauge assembly is the same as the Firehose Nozzle.

The person who wrote that was just joshin' you. ;)

I made a few more updates.

- Put in Steam Guage Assembly, marked as an unrequired quest item as someone explained
- Added a couple more items that are just junk.

Also, just to clarify, I am still listing things of high value if they are only worth selling on for the caps ie: Pack of Cigarettes. I realise they are not "junk" as such because they have a decent value but they still serve no other purpose than to sell on. Hope that makes sense.

Where is the Sunset Sarsaparilla Deputy Badge? Is this definately not quest related and just to be sold? Is this true for BoS Holotags too?

A few of you mentioned Yeast but this is used in Cass' Moonshine.

Anything else?
