Be looking for ways to improve the skills for it, so that the skill levels make it worthwhile.

If you have all of the DLC's it comes faster. The Ultimate Edition is ideal - you start out with extra goodies, but using those skills isn't helpful for level up. Using skill points at level up is - so that what you want to do is gain experience points by any means you can, then investing them in gun related skills.

The Hunter perk is a good one, when first starting out. It means you can more successfully kill animals. Look at the perks for each level, and after reviewing them all choose a path that takes you in the right direction...

Most of the perks have pre-requisites. Be careful what you use your points for! Build towards what you want to be able to do
