Launcher has stopped working

For some reason, once steam did an automatic update, my game launcher no longer works. I click on the steam icon, and get the screen for New Vegas, and then the error message: Fallout New Vegas Launcher has stopped working, and then it says windows searching for a fix, and comes back to contact the software company. But I think there is a problem with steam since the problem started when they did an update. Is there a way to turn that off, bet not.
Is there someone or somebody out there somewhere that can help me get my program back up and running. Or do I have to uninstall and reinstall it all over again? Which I just might do anyway. But will wait and see what comes up on here..

I am with you, seems that steam did something in its last update that messed up something. I asked if there was a way to roll back the update, and they told me no. So now we sit with a game we paid for and can not play.....WHY????

Just keep trying, after two or three attempts it usually starts fine.

Well, I am glad that works for you, I tried it and still the same thing launcher has stopped working. Which to me sounds like a steam problem, but the say it is a third party problem, kind of like politicains they just pass the buck to some one else. Why does the game I paid for have to played through this steam thing? I paid for it, yet I don't own it or have the ability to play it. Now that is just wrong.

Hva you tried verifying the game cache?
The game has worked in the past? Any crashes at all?

Not even sure where to find the cache, and yes it has crashed several times in the pass. I would be playing and all of a sudden it closed. But I could always go back and start the game. But since they did the update, on Tuesday I have not been able to play my expensice computer game. Guess I need to stay away from ones associated with steam. How do I uninstall the game and maybe reinstallig it would fix the problem.

Verify integrity of game cache

1. Load Steam
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

Okay, Thanks for the info. I have the verify intergrity and it came back as one file failed and would be reaquired, it says it had been downloaded, and I ran it again and got the same message again, and again it said it had downloaded the file and ran it again, and I am still gettting the same message... So is this something I need to keep doing until it says all is okay? I went and checked the game afterwards and now the launcher is working again. So thanks to you and this bit of information, I can now play my game again. So Thank you, I appreciate all your assistance.......Thanks again........
Seems my celebrating was to quick. I just tried to play the game again and guess what it came up with the same message........Launcher not working........guess I will go back to the verify and do it again, might have to do that every tiem I want to play, now that could be a pain before long........Well just tried that and guess what it did not work.........Mayvbe I should keep doing it till it says okay...Right.
How many times do you have to do the verify. I have done it 12 times and it comes up with the same message. One file bad and acquiring file. Make that 13 times.

Okay how do you reinstall steam. I have reinstalled the game, and it started the first time. Tried to start it a second time and it gave me the same error. So it has to be something with Steam because the game worked until the update was done. Now I can't get it to work more that one time before I get the error message again and again.

The launcher has its problems on Vista/Win7 x64, it's get away when you set the compatiblity of the launcher to Windows XP. Another one the fine things ignored by the QA team on purpose, or they finally admit their incompetence.

"Game Launcher Crashes"

This can be caused from a couple of problems. Try one or more to get rid of the error. This usually happens for a non-Windows XP operating system, such as Windows 7 or Windows Vista, but it CAN happen on Windows XP. Note that if you have Windows XP, the compatibility mode solution will do nothing for you, so try one of the other methods.

1A. Load the game folder and set each EXE to run in "windows XP" compatibility mode (right click the exe's -> properties -> compatibility -> check "run this program in compatibility mode for" -> select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)"

AND/OR

1B. Do NOT run the game shortcut created on your desktop. Load Steam directly instead and select the game.

AND/OR

1C. Validate your game files

AND/OR

1D. Update your drivers

OR

1E. Reinstall the game

I have done all the steps you mentioned except the first one. So I will try to do that. Now I have to find my fallout folder......Let you know how it works out.

I've also had this problem, and tried the "answers" without success. One that does seem to succeed is to launch via FOMM ( Fallout Mod Manager ) available here...

If you haven.t used this before, make sure you tick the Fallout esp.

I had the same problem. There are couple fixes that may help.

  • If you backed up your game files try reinstalling them from your back up.
  • However, if you go into Windows Explorer and go to ~/Steam/steamapps/common/fallout_new_vegas/ and double click on FalloutNV.exe it might start up properly for you.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times, but my save files aren't on my computer, or let me rephrase that, I don't know where they are. I have been doing saves all along but not sure where they are at. As for the FalloutNV.exe I am yet to find it. I went to the steamapps folder and to the new vegas folder but did not see any exe files.
Thanks for your suggestions..I am willing to try anything to get MY game working. All the jproblems really started when steam did an automatic update. Since then nothing but problems.

I've had this problem several times in the old days, but is less frequent now. Uninstalling steam & reinstalling steam by downloading latest steam app from http://store.steampowered.com/about/ always fixed this problem. Or even just manually reinstalling the steam app helped.

Well, I have done the above steps, I mean I have uninstalled and reinstalled steam several times, as well as the game. Sometimes when I do it, it will let me play one time, then the next time I try to start the game I once again get the Launcher Not working message.
I have tried the verify files thing, but every time it gives me, "1 files unable to verify, file will be reaquired." Yet if I run it a second, third, fouth, or how ever many times it comes back with the same message. Doesn't say what file or anything just will reaquire file. Which I guess must be bad, since it can't be verified when I run it the next time.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated. I have contacted Bethesda, and they have been no help, Steam says to contact third party vendor, like it isn't there problem. I have a funny feeling it is all their problem.
I just want to know WHY can't I play MY GAME, the one I paid for without having to go online to do so. I don't do online gaming, All I want to do is play my game on my computer that I paid for, which at this time isn't happening.

There HAS to be an exe file there. If there isnt then there is an issue elsewhere. Run a search for the file if you cant find it.

Have you tried a clean boot?
clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
-Disable all start-up items and non-MS services and reboot (follow the guide)
-At startup you need to verify they arent running. All the non ms services in msconfig should appear in the stopped state.
Also bring up the task manager and verify the startup programs are not running. THen try the game. Dont reenable half first.
If it still has issues then its probably not a third party app or service although it still could be.

Aside from the patch, has anything else changed on your computer that you can think of?

Have you tried scanning your HD for errors (filesystem inconsistencies)?
My computer and right click your drive select properties->tools->error checking you will probably have to reboot for this

I agree with this, don't bother with the default launcher headaches, even if you don't like \ don't use mods, Fomm is a Godsend, so is the 3 gig enabler plus http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38644

I went from crashing every 10 to 20 minutes with no mods enable to NO CRASHES AT ALL!!!! with around 40 mods active and maxed out graphics settings, thanks to the 3GB Fallout NV Enabler PLUS, it will not work with all systems you have to have atleast 4 gigs or ram, so make sure you read the description. (they are both very easy to install so long as you read what to do in the readme's or description)

Thanks for all the help. I will give it a try and see what happens. What are these mods everyone keeps talking about. I have never had or even know where to get a mod much less have any on my machine or in my games.

Now just where on that page do I click to download this enabler PLUS?
