And I am not talking about just using the horrible, low res built in map, I am talking about taking pictures of every cell using the construction set, and piecing it together to form a massive satellite image map.
Example, for Oblivion http://www.uesp.net/maps/obmap/obmap.shtml
There never was one for Fallout 3, and that really bugged me (Same game engine, same company, same way of making it, why not?) and so far it seems like nobody wants to try to make one for New Vegas.

Oh, someone ELSE needs to do it.

And calling the in-game map display bad is like calling the computers [censored]. The display is monochrome for a reason.

That Oblivion map is extremely helpful. I don't think anyone ever did similar to Fallout 3 either, but compared to Oblivion these games' maps are quite small.

I tried doing it myself without any instructions...
1. Load up the GECK and select the default file as your data
2. Open up a cell and zoom out to the distance you want.
If you took a screenshot at this point, it would look like this
http://filesmelt.com/dl/satellite.PNG

3. Manualy remove all the crap
http://filesmelt.com/dl/satellite2.PNG

I am sure that there is some way to make the GECK hide those coloured boxes, npc spawn locations ect. Also, there is probably some way to set the zoom level better to get a more uniform map, instead of some areas being more zoomed in.

Just make a giant map in MS Paint. Then draw a dot with a name. Most functionable map ever.

There is a Google Earth download that marks Fallout 3 locations onto Washington, D.C., but it was made pre-launch before all locations were revealed and isn't very complete.
