Look at these http://images.uesp.net//4/43/PGE1-map-Skyri.jpg http://images.uesp.net//3/33/Skyrim_map_Oblivion.jpg. Note in the first one, in the west of Skyrim, there is a city called Karthwasten, and in the second picture (which is newer) Karthwasten is missing, and to the east of where it was, there is a city called Markarth Side, which wasn't there in the older picture. My question is, what happened to Karthwasten, and why is it not acknowledged on the wiki or Imperial Library?

Poor old Karthwasten...I miss it so!

Maybe if they leave it out...it would be a solid choice for an ingenious modder like Shezrie.

if I recall correctly, Karthwasten burned down. I could of sworn I read a book in Oblivion stating that Karthwasten was sacked and burned during the Wolf Queen's reign. Although I could be wrong..

in reality many of the games are supposed to be set centuries apart, which if one studies history would tell you that cities rize and fall

All of the Elder Scrolls game thus far (I-IV) take place within the lifetime of the late Emperor Uriel Septim VII. More specifically, the last 40 or so years thereof.

I can't see anything about it there.

.Huntingohio is in fact correct. The first map comes from the PGE1, which is supposed to be an atlas of the Empire that was published in Tiber Septim's reign, 400+ years before the second map (contemporary to Oblivion) was made.

So the city is now in ruins?
