That is an excellent choice, although I must say that the 955 is exactly the same processor, AMD just clocked it up a little (something you can do on your own)

The deal with quad core processors is not all games utilize 4 cores, but if you're one of those people that are into multi tasking. (gaming with firefox/pandora/chatclients/ or even recording gameplay) a quad-core is a great idea... and you will wish you had it when you do bump into a 4core game.

I imagine you are trying to buy a reasonably priced processor, but I still feel obligated to tell you that AMD is releasing a new line of processors "Bulldozer" next month.

I would assume it has to do with the 32nm yield problems that Llano is also fighting, BD is in the same boat. AMD's stock dropped by an entire dollar today as well. To be honest I may just go z68 and jump ship over to an i52500k

No, you can't, unless your motherboard is AM3+ compliant. So choose wisely, or you may have to change your entire computer again sooner than you wanted.

And, as an additional suggestion, sometimes, a bit of overpowering is nice. I bought my Phenom II x4 920 (yours is barely a bit more powerful than it) 3 years ago. It was a bit of overpowered in it's time, but it has paid off: now I only had to upgrade my GPU in order to max Skyrim



Or it may have to be with the poor performance the first samples were rumored to have I've been following pretty closely Bulldozer's development, and I definitely will wait for the benchmarks before making any decision.

Well the CPU prediction here is still a murky to me but Im sure this one fall behind a bit by any standard. The rest of your rig seem solid. Strangely most of the core2duo CPUs are horribly priced considering you can get an i3 at the same price that blows it away, and decent quad cores are even worst when you can pick up a sandy bridges 2400 or 2500 for the same range. I did see one good pick on newegg for a budge upgrade. Still prolly better off upgrading to a new platform if you change processors IMO

There is no prediction "here" on Skyrim and CPUs, other than to guess that is unlikely to change from what FO-NV was.

While console GPUs are rather old now they still have impressive CPUs so it wouldn't be a massive surprise if the game was more CPU intensive then previous Bethesda titles.

Bard's Tale was concurrent with that hardware, circa 1985. But XGA was a development of the post-386 period. Game developers mostly ignored the early MS-DOS machines until EGA was released in 1986, sticking with Atari's 8-bit PC, Commodore's C64, and assorted other primitive machines that had better graphics than IBM's CGA.

Recently ordered a new PC, wondering if this is sufficient to run Skyrim at maximum settings?

Intel i7 2600K running at 3.4GHz
16GB DDR3 1600MHz
3GB Palit Nvidia 580

Running a single monitor at 1920x1080 resolution. Motherboard is dual channel and SLI/Crossfire ready.

Will probably get a second GPU for SLI for a multiple monitor (2+) set up later on.

Of course you will max it, you have a 2k+ Rig. It also say's in the OP.

No, you don't need to upgrade. Unless a game you play with that thing isn't working well for you, or there are very cheap upgrades due to sales, it would be a bad idea to waste money on upgrades. Preemptively upgrading when your hardware is currently that powerful would be like burning money. You will definitely be able to run it, and maybe even max it.

Can any of you guys tell me that if my ram usage is very high will my game crash? I really think I need more ram.

I am a PC noob. I have used macs for years because I am into audio production, and for me, the mac is where its at in that department. They do, however, svck bawls for gaming. It isn't that they are not capable, it is that not nearly as much software is developed for them in the game world.

Anyway, I want to play Skyrim (and Morrowind) on the PC so I can use mods - after a vanilla playthrough of course.

Unfortunately, I am the only one out of my friends who cares about PC gaming, so I don't really have anywhere to turn but the interwebs.
