Ok well im trying to edit most of the armors to make them more lively looking. So i do the typical sharpen filter on them. (NOTE) I do have the NVIDIA plugin to make photoshop CS5 Extended (x64) run DDS files. Every time i save them in 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32 bpp | unsigned with use existing MIP maps it crashes photoshop trying to save any ideas?

Does it actually crash with an error, or does it just not seem to do anything and not respond?

If it's the latter, I get the same problem, but it just takes a long time. It can take upwards off 3 minutes to save them for me, during which time it appears photoshop has crashed

I get that sometimes as well.
Sometimes saving a DDS will just sit there for a bit

Does this apply to all DDS files, or just Skyrim's insanely large files? If it applies to all DDS files, try reinstalling the plugin.

Just to clarify..
does it actually say '... has stopped working' or stopped responding? if the latter then they could be correct and it is just taking a long time to save.
The .tmp files are simply work files while it is saving.

Wasn't there an issue with nVidia's DDS tools on recent photoshops and/or 64 bit systems, or was that fixed?

The only issue I know of, was that the 32-bit Nvidia tools would 'pretend' to install on a 64-bit system, and you're forced to install the 64-bit tools, instead of the 32-bit ones.
(which is stupid, as some of us are running 32-bit Photoshop because most plugin creators haven't switched to 64-bit yet)

I was able to work around that stupidness by using "UniExtract" and taking the Filter file and the DDS export tool out of the exe and sticking them in the appropriate folders
