Thanks

Getting back into Skyrim after a month hiatus. Is the ugrid skyrim.ini process unchanged from when Skyrim was first released?

Just want to make sure that there hasn't since been a better way to make this setting change. Thanks.

nope... the only thing that has changed is that you don't need the 4gb launcher or LAA patch because it's already included in skyrim as of v1.3 natively.

i updated the original post of this thread with the spoiler tags added to hide the now dated and unnecessary stuff referring to the LAA/4gb patch solution...

I used spoiler tags so that for historical sakes, and for those still running older skyrim versions, that if need be.. someone can pop the spoiler tag to show the rest of the original article.

I hate to delete stuff like that because i find myself constantly looking for thing on the internet and someone has gone around and cleaned up threads or updated them removing the old and actually necessary information. BLAH... so i don't do that.

I have tried the uGridstoload=7 settings several times, and it not stable on my computer. I have a HD6950 2GB, 4Gb of RAM, Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650, Vista32.

Has anyone got any suggests what I could try to make uGridstoload=7 more stable for me?

This iPreloadSizeLimit=126877696 made UGridsToLoad=11 totally stable for me, without it I get crap loads of LOD pop in and stutter from the frequent LOD pop in. With iPreloadSizeLimit=126877696 everything is fine, a bit laggy when looking in certain places but definitely playable if I wanted to put up with the added lag. I might settle for UGridsToLoad=9 though as the lag is a bit extreme in some places.

I noticed that both settings together allow for more detailed textures to be seen from a distance but it also introduces some god awful blurring of distance like a really strong DOF effect.

Edit: Scratch that, it might be just some light fog in the area adding worse DOF then usual.

The method for returning back to default values doesn't work anymore because the new Skyrim.ini, generated through 'saveini', is now saved in the data folder. When I copy this file into my 'My Documents/My Games/Skyrim'-direction it doesn't work and I get a CTD while loading the savegame.

Is there any other method for returning back to default?
Use the "refreshini" command without quotes.

1) Load save game while using appropriate UGridsToLoad setting to successfully load it.

2) Alt-Tab out of the game and open Skyrim.ini

3) Revert UGridsToLoad setting to a lower/preferred value

4) Alt-Tab back to game and open the console, type "refreshini" without quotes

5) Save game

6) Exit game to desktop

7) Start the game and load your save game

If you skip step 6 and attempt to load the save game then the game will crash, the process has still succeeded though so you should be able to load your latest save game with the new UGridsToLoad values in effect.

Your problem is running windows vista 32bit..

your GPU is consuming most of your physical ram..

your can't run 4gb of ram + 2gb video card in windows vista 32bit without the available ram being reduced to 1.75gb or less... this is barely enough to run the game, and that's with a LOT of pageing too which will cause ugrids to become unstable.

you MUST upgrade to 64bit windows.

Yep, due to how 32bit Windows operating systems work your video card is hogging a lot of your RAM. If you upgrade to a 64bit Windows operating system then 32bit applications/games will have full access to up to 4GB of RAM.

Thanks, DHJudas & Franpa!

I had a feeling that vista 32bit was the problem.

This sure looks nice at 7, but damn, my game saves and game stability have gone down the toilet as a tradeoff, so I gotta go without it.

mate with that system you should be at least 9, i can have 9 but it stutters way too much and no settings helps with that at all, ive got a i5 2400 non k 3.10ghz, hd6950 overclocked, and i get constant 60 fps with new patch allthough i play at 1360x768, im guessing your playing with some massive res. id rather igher ugrid than res though tbh, the default 5 is laughable, that sort of view distence dont belong on these pcs
