Sounds are present but music has completely disappeared

Pretty much what it says in the title, all the sounds of the game still run but the music has completely disappeared (yes, the volume is on,before you ask). I had downloaded a few mods from the steam workshop without any problems and during one the music just fell away and hasn't returned since. I have rebooted both the game and my computer and deleted all the mods I had recently installed after it happened but nothing has changed.

I've also looked it up but no one else seems to have this problem, there are a lot of questions about there being no sound at all but that isn't my problem obviously. This is the first issue I've had since I bought the game in November by the way.

I really miss the beautiful soundtrack of this game and would love some suggestions on how to fix this.

thank you

The first couple of things to do:
  • Open Steam, go to Library, find Skyrim, right click on it and select "Properties". Go to the "Local Files" tab and select "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".
  • Go to .\My Games\Skyrim and delete: Skyrim.ini & SkyrimPrefs.ini.
Start the game and check.

Post a full Dxdiag report and a full list of the mods you're using -don't forget to add a spoiler tag to each list, to keep the thread clean and without clutter.

I know, it sounds bureaucratic, but nobody will be in position to actually help you any further, unless you give a hand here

I remember seeing people with Realtek sound chips having trouble with Skyrim. Take a look at http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1352866-realtek-low-sound-fix/. Towards the bottom of the page, it's being mentioned that enabling loudness equalization makes things better.

It's also being mentioned on http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1354554-guys-please-i-need-help/, along with the following, which I would read very carefully, if I was you:

I suspect you have very low sound in-game, rather than no sound. I'd like to test that theory really quickly: can you go to your Sounds control panel, right click on whatever audio device you're using with Skyrim, and select "Properties?" Then go to the Enhancements tab and scroll down the list until you find something called "Loudness Equalization." Toggle it on, click Apply and then OK, and then try to run Skyrim.

If I'm right, the sound should become audible again. The trouble is Skyrim derps out hardcoe with anything other than a 5.1 sound set-up: end result is the game seeming to be muted (or in my case, I could only hear about every third word of dialogue, if that). Loudness Equalization is a bandaid fix, though--just toggle it on to test and see if your sound levels are fixed.

I'm not familiar with Creative cards, which I assume is what you have from what I can sort of your dxdiag. This solution to get Skyrim audible again is for Realtek onboard sound, but it may help you sort things out. Basically you'll have to set whatever audio equipment you have to 5.1, even if it's only stereo, for Skyrim to be audible properly.

And finally, whether you have it installed or not, head to Microsoft, download http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8109 and install it. It's always good to be on the safe side, when things come at this point.

Alright!! Problem is solved and everything sounds perfect now. It was my unusual speaker set up which was working fine, until i got a new vid card and changed from a VGA cable to an HDMI. For some reason (no idea how all this tech nonsense really works) that muted my front two speakers until i switched around some wires. Now all is good and music has returned to the world of skyrim...yay. Thanks Atkara for your help, you got me on the right track!
