My guess is that Derkeethus cannot be made a steward, since the guy who does his voice doesn't do any of the other followers in the game.

I should tell my friend about Erik. He was always afraid that he was going to get himself killed if he became an adventurer. Now he can give him a job.

Roggi Knot-Beard works. He keeps talking about the meaderies in Riften, so it gets a bit annoying, but he is one of the more likable guys.

Ingjard from the Dawnguard can become steward, so add her to the list. Just checked.

Adelaisa Vendicci is my steward in Pale,
Derkeethus can't be steward, i have tried that for my argonian char.....

Yeah, Derkeethus can't be a steward. It's a shame really, i was hoping to have 2 other Argonians around

I think it's kinda annoying that there are no stewards fitting my shady character. i mean no DB followers, not janassa (who can be though of as shady npc since she has no problem killing or stealing from inocent people and finaly Ahtar who just looks plain badass with his sinister physique, executioner habits and that awsome axe... if any of you know of a steward who fits the evil agenda please let me know.

I don't think he works properly. I mean, he comes up to you with the dialogue, but after accepting his proposal he just walked away (and the only option in conversation is to hire him again..)

Beast races REALLY got screwed over in skyrim. Can ANY Khajitt or Argonians be stewards?

They really did, didn't they? Makes me not even want to play this game sometimes.

So I know this isn't the best place to ask, but I am thinking about reloading my marriage with Aela, and keeping her essential and as my Steward. I think she is the only essential character who is a possible candidate for Steward. Which brings me to my next question - Is she the only essential NPC option for Steward? Is Vilkas/Farkas essential? I have read two different sources, one says they are marked not-essential after "Glory of the Dead" but another source says they are essential until they complete "Purity"
Can anyone confirm/deny this?

The only other essential NPCs I can think of are Cicero and Serana, and they are both not options to be Stewards.

I believe that Farkas/Vilkas are essential until you marry them, according to the following game wikis:

Of the two, Vilkas is listed on the first post of this thread as able to be a steward.

Okay, I can confirm there is a problem with Erik the Slayer as a steward.

You can hire him as a follower and bring him to your home, but that's where a problem crops up.

I tried two different ways of doing things, neither one worked.

1. Upon arrival at the Hall, he offers to become a steward. If you accept, he signs on, but then all you get is a follower message (wanting to follow you). He won't go into the Hall or do any steward-related duties.

2. Upon arrival at the Hall, decline his offer to become steward, and then dismiss him as follower. You are not then able to hire him as a steward.

I think it's conclusive to say Erik is not capable of being a steward.

He should work if Faendal works. Same VA iirc.

Marcurio works, my girlfriend just did it. He takes awhile to become one, but he will do it. I think she still have to pay him to have him come with her as a follower though.

My planning is back on track then. (If PS3 ever gets this...)
An easy way to find out who works should be to check the list of voice actors, since it seems like NPC's with certain voice actors work (for the obvious reason that these were the actors who recorded the necessary dialogue).

Strange works just fine for me.

Erik never gave me the dialog. I gave him to the blades after he wouldn't become my steward.

I tried too. Though she would have been cool.
