Actually talking about New Zealand birds, a giant version of the Kea in Skyrim would be highly amusing. They are a highly intelligent, omnivorous alpine Parrot standing nearly two feet tall, and are known to prey on sheep and livestock. They break into peoples tents at night looking for food and steal peoples belongings, they can even break into cars and puncture tires with their beaks.

They could maraud around Skyrim in gangs (like in RL) and even pickpocket travellers, or break into campsites at night. Getting attacked by a swarm of Giant Keas wouldn't be much fun.

I think i ..... FOUND IT....

N.H.Christ that is freaking awesome, after that i have to readjust the Extinct Animal Pineapple Scale and put Haast's Eagles in at a 4.5/5 awesome pineapples!!

So like Ripatero said this thing was huge (largest eagle by body mass) and hunted 7ft flightless Moa, what Ripatero didn't say was that it didn't really fly or hunt like any normal eagle: it's wing span was relatively small, but it was massive (up to 15km) and only flew short distances, which it made use of by barrelling into its prey at 80 km/h (50 mph). Imagine that hurtling towards you out of a cliff as you round a corner on your horse (or Irish Elk... or maybe a Wooly Rhino......) only to have it explode on impact from a Giant Eagle Missile. No more puncy Cliffracer hover and peck i beg you!!

And to whoever mentioned Woolly-Dodo-Bears you are a genius.

And to all the doubters, yeah you don't have to be a genius to figure out that they wont include all those animals. It's about the player's experience after all, so they should only include enough to make the world seem alive, not actually be alive... And hey i think it's cool to see that from the perspective of someone who studies and enjoys the environment - it is mainly set outside afterall.

And to the dude who says "I don't think any of that is necessary..especially considering the eagle isn't even an arctic creature." I did not know all of Skyrim existed in an Arctic environment? Plus there are tons of Vulture and Eagle like birds that live in the high mountainous regions of Asia/Middle-East, which i thought was the main environment of the game... And see previous paragraph. Huge fail dude.

And I second random mudcrab merchant, preferably named Admiral Crunch with big F-Off claw.

Aw hell, might as well indulge myself. Ever heard of Sarkastodon? Bigger than a bear, but kind of like wolverine-otter-cat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarkastodon

Then there's Entelodon, a cow-sized hog. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entelodon

Terror birds are always great. Brontornis, especially. (Two links, here.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brontornis http://scrubmuncher.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/big-beastly-and-very-extinct-birds/

Andrewsarchus, possible the largest land-dwelling carnivorous mammal ever. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrewsarchus_mongoliensis

Prehistory is always fun.

what kind of animals does the almighty Lore say we'll get? I think a game set in the time of megafauna would be awesome. Doesn't even have to be accurate, just different. What about having some non threatening animals? I found that in some of the vanilla verisons there were only malicious animals, nothing friendly other than a rabbit or something. Someone mentioned a dodo - sure why not?

Nitroximos, yeah intersting stuff. What about the Hyenadon, part of the same family as the wolverines and weasels but weighed up to 1200 pounds. A Skyrim version would obviously need to be woolly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyaenodon_gigas

And the Gigantopithecus blacki, an enormous Ape that stood up to ten feet tall. Would also look good in this seasons fashion- a woolly coat.

Hyaenodon is cool enough, but a big, wooly ape? Add an extra eye and you have yourself a frost troll, and we already have those.

Woolly rhinos would be cool, but I would also appreciated more Nirn based creatures. I think the closest thing to a saber tooth tiger in TES is the Senche or Palmer Khajiit :P.

I Still want a Mudcrab army anything else is just is just trying to stray me away from my idea. <_< ..... But a Woolly Rhino wouldn't be so Bad i Guess....

If it is a mudcrab army you want than so be it...http://fishwrecked.com/files/images/mud%20crabs.jpg. Godspeed lynxleath.

Those be some hardcoe crabs. Maybe not quite as hardcoe as the Coconut Crab, but pretty damn close. (Isitokaytosaythe"d"wordonhereI'veseenpeoplesayitbutI'mnotsurepleastdon'tgivemeawarningohpleaseohplease)
Anyhow...I think the closest thing to a sabretooth cat in Nirn is a sabretooth cat. Seeing as how, y'know...there are sabretooth cats in Nirn. It's confirmed.

Hey umm.. i dont wanna be the debby downer here but you all know none of those will be in the game they are just too unrealistic,, and lets be serious here none of those even come close to the fierce ** realistic** creatures that i think will be in the game....... such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_of_Caerbannog and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikachu oh and of course http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie_the_Giant_Chicken

Oh yeah I forgot about that screen shot, and it looked resplendent in its shaggy white fur.

Shadeslayer, might be the wrong climate for them but maybe the Australian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear could liven up the forest areas.

They could make it more subtle so as not to seem like they're ripping it off, but I think it would be awesome to have some hybrid animals like in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Has there been any mention of bears?

I thought they'd be the most obvious candidates, along with wolves (which we have).

Sabretoothed cats, Elk AND Woolly Mammoths... You cannot include these extinct beasties wihtout their good buddy Coelodonta antiquitatis, think about how awesome it would be to stumble across the territory of an advlt male Woolly Rhino and have him charge at you and try to tear you a new rectum!!

It needs to happen! Sabretooth = 3/5 awesome pineapples on the extinct animal scale, Elk = 2.5/5 and Mammoths = even a 4, but Woolly Rhinos are freaking awesome and top the lot with a 5/5 awesome pineapples!!!

And where are the Buffalo, Camels, Giant Short Faced Bears, Giant Ground Sloths, Great Auks, Paraceratheriums (largest terrestrial mammal ever) or mega sized eagles like Haast's Eagle of New Zealand? And not to forget the smaller animals: Cavies, Mongoose, Water Dragons, Water Rats, Stoats and Boars? Hell even put in a freaking Duck-billed Dinosaur (7/5 awesome pineapples)!!

Ok so there is a piont to this madness! An open world game where one can explore the open lands needs a good atmosphere to engage a player, so getting that "realism" into the game is essential. For example having a functioning ecosystem in play, where you can come across a Sabretooth or Haast's Eagle (seriously check it out this thing is awesome - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haast%27s_Eagle) hunting an Elk or Vultures scavenging on a dead Rhino carcus, really makes the world feel alive. ie. you being a part of the world rather than the player feeling like centre of everything happening. Red Dead did this really well with mountain lions attacking travellers or random birds flyring around or scattering when you come near. So anyway i hope Bethesda can include all this to make Skyrim so much more engrossing.

Morrowind's unique wildlife really captured my imagination, so i hope Skyrim's is unique too! Like some crazy hairy Buffalo-Komodo Dragon-Elk hybrid or Vulture-Bear-Sloth hybrid, i dunno but it needs to be unique after the borefest of Oblivion!

SO i was wondering what experiences other prospective Skyrim players are hoping to enjoy in the mountains and valleys of Skyrim come 11.11.11?? I'm thinking of things like hunting a little furry critter and then following it into cave only to be confronted with a big Mofo furry critter that didn't like you chasing it's kid: Things that will drag you deeper into the world.

Discuss!

Its not Elder Scrolls 5: Extinct Earth Animals. I think the real animals should end at Mammoth, why do they have so much trouble making anything original anymore? Morrowind was all original.

Aw, I loved them in Avatar! Didn't look anywhere near as ridiculous as those eyeless Tyranosaurus heads with legs in Morrowind. And doesn't need to be too obvious. Something like the Komodo Rhino sounds totally plausible in reality, let alone fantasy.
