Watching a Mr.Handy read the little dead boy "There will come soft rains" :sad:

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pool singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

That really bothers me and I hope it was the raiders and not the school system at the time of the bombs fall.

Some of the tough moral question can get to me also, like the tree.

If the raiders did it the kids would have to be 200 years old.

There are lots of things in Fallout 3 that are sad, so it's hard to name them all.

I think the moments that stand out are:

  • Mr. Handy reading the poem 'There Will Come Soft Rains' to a 200 year old child's skeleton
  • The entirety of Vault 92. Very sad, and very, very creepy.
  • Seeing the picture of LW and Dad at the end of the cinematic after activating the Purifier.
  • Not being able to join the Enclave! :swear: :P

The whole game is sad, a lament to a failed race. It has a special resonance for anyone who grew up during the cold war.

On my very, very first time playing the game I explored the school and saw the skeletons and already knew they were too old to have been killed by the Raiders. The skeletons wouldn't be all brown-black like that.

A more logical reason is school was in when the bombs fell or the school served as a local cheap shelter, and clearly they didn't make it through.

Reading the mechanic's terminal in the Vault 87 entrance.
There's also a very sad one at the Germantown Police HQ made by a nurse just after the war.
Northeast of the Temple of the Union you can pick up a radio signal (Oscar Zulu), it's not just a normal morse code message either.

- The poem, we're all in agreement on that.
- The moment you step out of the vault on your first play. Don't tell me you didn't take a breath and let it out with a quiet '[censored]'.
- I don't know if this is really a spoiler, but I'll hide it anyway - to do with the Purifier, but not what Chris already said -
Spoiler
Last night I thought to activate Broken Steel you had to get your companion to start it, so I sent Charon in, assuming since he's a ghoul it wouldn't matter anyway. Apparently it does - during the end cinematic, the narrator described him as the true hero, and talked about sacrifice... to me, that implied I'd killed him. I've not been so upset by a game since Metal Gear 4 where 'Big Boss'' remains are burnt by Liquid, killing him and Eva in one go. ;-;

LULZ!! I didn't know what would've happened, but when I saw the ending for the first time, I was DEFINITELY not kosher with the fact he was saying that Charon had died :/

Spoiler
I was gonna rant and rave, but when I woke up from being in a 2 week's coma, and saw his face, all I could say was "CHARON!!!" like how lil' Jayn would have XDD Then I just set out for more adventures :3

Charon: Christ...and I t'ought that would'a been the end of our adventures... -__-;;

I thought that too but in some locations where raiders (or other evil characters) are present you can see individual skeletons in small cages, as if they were being tortured. Now I'm not saying it's not possible that they are pre-war child skeletons, I'm just pointing out that it's equally possible that they were the victims of raiders.

Moving back on topic: If I remember right, somewhere in downtown DC there is Personal Shelter with an advlt sized skeleton and a child skeleton. You can find a toy car and a lunchbox inside.

I don't find the poem sad at all. The holotapes in Operation Anchorage of the soldier that runs are pretty dark.

It's not the poem that's sad it's the fact that it's being read to a little dead boy.

So true. My dad would agree. Heck, just reading old terminals from before the war makes me sad. Not sure why, but it's just like they were so insignificant compared to everything that happened, yet their typed words are some of the only data left from a time left behind.

Reading the mechanic's terminal in the Vault 87 entrance.

Agreed. It's creepy as hell, too. Just thinking about the guy going mad... eerie.

The Oscar Zulu radio broadcast is sad as well.
Spoiler
How old are the skeletons when you find them cuddled up? It's spooky to think the voice of a man dead for maybe 100 years is still speaking to us.

I haven't seen the terminal in Germantown, but I'll be sure to check it out.

What's worse is that you find out the son was killed in an FEV experiment. The vault officials just marked him as "missing" in an attempt to cover it up.

I never read the terminals in V87 because they were too long(and boring in my opinion) but it looks like I was wrong. That's really sad and messed up.
