Point Lookout endless load - cant leave!

I was enjoying Fallout 3 GOTY but I am now stuck in Point Lookout. Whenever I get near the city walls, the game will freeze. If I try to fast travel to a nearby location, the game will load endlessly. That means it cant even leave point lookout and continue the main quest. How may this be fixed?
I started playing on the regular version of the game but then purchased the GOTY disc instead of downloading the DLC.
Please help!
