How would you want to see in-game "romance" handled?

So i'm plugging away at my Crapton mod today, and I noticed some of my original design notes. Specifically, that most characters in the town would be able to have friendships develop with the Lone Wanderer (in the form of basic unmarked quests that net you various rewards and dialogue options), but I also wanted certain characters to be "love interests" for the player.

However, I don't want this to be boring! But so far, all i've got is:
1. Courtship: Introduce yourself, flirt, bring the character an item they like or escort them to a location they want to go (for example, one characters ideal first date might be a trip to the Yao Guai Tunnels!) One character, a ghoul to be specific, only lets people date his daughter {http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Born_ghoul} if they have Deadly Radiation Poisoning :D.
2. ????
3. Profit!

So, let me ask you: if you downloaded a mod that had some kind of a romance side-quest (which I want to be as unintrusive as possible- there'll be no relationship decay or anything like that, no pop-up messages saying "you should visit your girlfriend!" and things like six will probably be a fade-to-black kind of deal), how would you want it to be handled? Specifically, what would you envision as the whole point to dating an NPC to be? Would they just give you free items, or what?

I fixed it for ya. Anywho probably the usual date style which would involve taking them to various places in town and what not. Or you could do it like proper japanese advlt games where a storyline unfolds and during it you try to seduce the character of your choice.

If it was me i'd probably add messages boxes to the fade to black detailing what happens with some randomness to it. Then again i've written quite alot of stuff so that'd be pretty normal.

Generally the idea of dating characters in game is to provide some amusemant and something to do. Not to provide perks or special abilities.

I'd like to see it handled the way it's handled in Mass Effect. Bioware does a great job with it, IMO. :)

Basically, The whole thing I would suggest going towards is sort of like what you say there...But..It's better to explain if you've played Fable 2..As the romance and relationships you could plug into that were EXCELLENT as in the sense the actual levels and acquired abilities/disciplines from each progression...Basically just make it to where you can flirt then get to know them by escorting them to places that they may like (You can only figure this out if you actually pay close attention to the personality of the npc(actor) And if at all you wish to include sixual intercourse, do so behind a blank black curtain so this mod can be child safe, and the result is i dont know, a baby carriage that can be scripted to give certain baby items to and after a good couple weeks the baby becomes a child..Then a teen...Then a advlt and can become a companion...Where as all I've said makes your mod take a lot of work lol

I like the idea of having a child- with the Born Ghoul girlfriend, such a rapid aging rate could make a lot of sense (they tend to age pretty quickly). Not sure if I want six to always result in a child, but at least for that one character, it'd be a good possibility. :D

I also like the idea of having to pay attention to the character.

If there's romance (awww) then there MUST be [censored] (bad!) also... Otherwise.... my mind will crumble into dirty socks with a hint of bananas.

Okay.. That's entirely up to you in the end.

The world of Fallout is now er... not able to be perfect because of your ways of modding..

I may or may not be kidding.

Well, can't really think of anything that should be in it, but being given free items seems fairly off. I'd it would work better either without any sort of reward, or something along the lines of a long duration well rested buff.

I'd want to handle it by sending the romance-happy dude off with one of my followers, and I'd go do something more interesting in the meantime, like shoot at stuff :)

A few things I'd want to see, some of which I may include in my own house/companion mod:

1. Dialog options based on character stats. A romance quest would be a lot more immersive if, playing through it several times, your choices and outcomes varied a bit. Smart guys might not go for dumb girls, and vice versa. If done right, and with enough options, the result will be a love interest that the player, as well as the character, will like and thus avoid the pitfalls of annoying-but-necessary NPC interactions.
2. Option to pick them up as a companion. Lovers tend to do stuff together, and I think it's safe to say anyone who's survived in the wasteland is probably enough of a hardass to not flinch at helping their boyfriend/girlfriend in their adventures.
3. Keep it heavy on dialog, and throw in some dynamicity that you can strike out if she's not your type or if you're not her type. Romance quests have a bad reputation because most of them are basically "pass a speech check->give an item->receive husband/wife".

Anyone who says "EWWWWWWWW" for your mod, doesn't deserve to download them.

Well I mean like, It wouldn't have to be with every person that you could have six with, Lets just say theres a sterile girl, i dunno..a gay guy? (shudder) and the ghoul girl and the ghoul is the only one that you can actually have children with..Please DO NOT consider adding the gay >.>" maybe a lesbo or something :P

I'm not sure I would consider that choice any worse than, say, finding Brian Wilks a home or selling him into slavery. Or fixing/detonating Megaton. Or who you side with at Tenpenny...no wait, that one ends in a massacre no matter what. I think what he's saying is a romance quest should have an option for the totally amoral psychopath, as it goes for most things Fallout. Can't say I disagree, though it wouldn't do me much good as I tend to play at least morally neutral characters.

Your better off to include all 3 options regardless of personal preference. That is assuming you can handle doing all 3 options.

Also on the note of the baby the model from The Pitt would work excellent. I'd only have it for one character though or at least make it so you can prevent having a kid.
