Missing NPC's

After a few friends that has been encouraging/hassling me for so long I finally started my first playthrough of Fallout 3. A bit late to the party I know, but with so many games out there and so little time to play, what are you gonna' do.
Anyway just a quick question (although I have quite a few), - in Megaton the Sherriff Lucas Simms and the guy that buys your scrap metal Walter have disappeared from my game. I mean they're no longer in Megaton at all.
Is this a glitch or did I do something wrong? I haven't caused any shennanigans in Megaton and my Karma fluctuates between Good and Very Good if that matters.
