You can get Dogmeat back with the Broken Steel "Puppies" perk, though I'm not sure if that will still work if Dogmeat has died before getting this perk.

If Charon is dead, that's it. Unless you are on pc, then you'll be able to get him back using console commands. But yes, there are several other companions out there

Just wait until you get Fawkes...

You'll need to meet some karma requirements to obtain some of these companions.

I play on PC and Dogmeat and Charun died before I got that skill you mentioned Gelmir.

Is having more than 1 companion possible and like in BigTown is there any settlement defending quests in F3?

I am intended after I finish F3 and all DLC's I will have another char in F3.

I think you are limited to Dogmeat and one other companion. For example you can get Dogmeat and Fawkes, but you cannot get both Charon and Fawkes.

Have you been to Canterbury Commons yet? They also need defending. Sort of.

Actually in the last 10 days I have finished a lot of quests and discovered many places -except this stuck waters of life -

when will the game end? have you got any more suggestions for me to do?

Could you give me your current objective for your Water of Life quest so I'll know exactly what stage of that quest you are in? Might be able to help you continue, then.

The game will end when you finish the main quest. Waters of Life is part of the main quest. Unless you have the Broken Steel DLC, that will continue after the ending of the game and will allow you to keep playing.
