Will Fallout 12 Work with Real Time Combat?

Some time ago I was looking to play a isometric game with guns. People suggested Fallout 1 and 2, but upon research I realized that it's not real time combat, but turn based. And then with further research I realized that almost all isometric games involving guns are turn based, such as X-COM, Jagged Aliance, wasteland2 etc.

Now, what if fallout 1/2 becomes real time combat with guns, or if fallout 3/4 deploys a isometric camera (I know there's mod for it, haven't tried though), that probably opens up some interesting gameplay, and introduces some challenges:

pros:

- more tactical options, especially with team. For example, since it's isometric view, player can see the surroundings better. along with AI control, player can pull off some nice tactical movements to defeat tough enemies

Cons:

- can't see very far. I think this can be worked around by allowing the camera to center on the target or some distance away from player when aiming

- when inside buildings, some tricks have to be implemented to make the top down view work, such as hiding the ceiling and top levels, or simply placing each building story in a separate load level

- aiming is not as important any more

What do you think?

Technically it works. FOT could be played in real time or turn based, and it looked exactly like FO 1 and 2. Aiming still works, it would all be based on a characters gun skills, though, and would need to be improved for real time(basically have a tactical screen for each character you wanted to make aimed shots and setup where you would like them to aim and shoot people, for example you could have a sniper you setup to take head shots). That is something Tactics didn't have for aiming in real time, but that is how it could work, kinda similar to the overwatch system the game used.

Interesting! What if the aiming works just like FPS, except the aiming direction is determined by the cursor position. For example, you have an enemy standing there, and you move cursor on to his groin (lolz) then the player will aim at his groin; and if your mouse is not on any particular target, then the player character will just shoot straight ahead towards the general direction of the cursor (x and z plane)

Well, in FOT it was all skill based, based on your characters skill level in whatever weapon they using, guns, energy weapons, big guns, etc. For aimed shots you just had the character selected to make aimed shots, but couldn't direct where the aimed shot would go. Aimed shots basically useless in FOT, at least compared to FO 1 and 2, so the system would need working to make it viable. I think it would be best to just have a tactical screen where you setup % to hit specific targets for aimed shots and set up a progression. Say if 75% or greater to hit the head, your character aimed at head and if not aimed for something else, or you could prioritize a leg shot first, etc. Then just let it play out in real time.

Would be much easier to describe if you ever played FOT in real time. lol.

OR aimed shots could be the VATS system, so if you wanted to make aimed shots you went into a pause bullet time mode as you picked your target, and for non-aimed shots it just played out in real time. Could do that as well. Similar to what we have now.

There are mods for Fallout and Fallout 2 to make it real time. The ones I know of also make them multiplayer as well.

Still as pointed out, if you are looking for Tactical real time Fallout. Fallout Tactics is the game to play :fallout:
