Assuming V13 IS indeed a fallout MMO (as we all suspect but have not had verified), how does everyone think the story should be handled? Will there be multiple branching stories affected by your choices? Or Will there be one generic story for all players? I can't think of any MMOs off the top of my head that utilized conversation trees, much less actually remembered choices you made previously.

Also what about the fallout universe in general? With two different companies developing the universe in two very different ways who has final say in 'what is fallout' (in terms of designating story as canon)? obviously if you are HERE you are hoping its gamesas, but fanboyism aside who do you think actually does have the final say?

I think gamesas's story will be cannon as far as the license was kept with them. Now that They Who Must Not Be Named have it, what they say goes. It's a shame, but that's the legality of it. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

JK Rowling? Harry Potter? ... ;)

Seriously, I remember hearing it will be based off canon. And it rightfully should be canon because that is what we die-hards want. Fallout is not fallout when it strays from canon.

Just trying to keep Chris off of my back.

I think what he means is who's cannon will be correct. gamesas or... I didn't say it Chris!

Like I said before, those with the rights to the IP have the rights to dictate what is cannon and what is not (I think). A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit

I am just kidding about JK and Harry Potter.

Anyway, FO3 did stray from canon so I am not sure that "Other" developer (OD) will state anything. Besides, we the customers can influence decisions. So if the OD decides to influence gamesas to follow their canon, then we need to make a statement. We can send them a bunch of toy cap cannons to make our statement be heard like we fans did for Jericho by sending CBS a truck load of peanuts when they threaten to end the show.

Taken from the wikipedia ....

"Though the producers seemed confident that the program would be picked up for a second season,[13] CBS officially announced Jericho's cancellation on May 16, 2007.[14][15][16]

Several online communities, including the official Jericho forums, launched campaigns in an effort to revive the show. Fans also sent just over 20 tons of nuts to CBS headquarters; this referred to a scene from the season one finale "Why We Fight" where Jake Green repeats General Anthony McAuliffe's historic phrase "Nuts!" from the Battle of the Bulge.[17] The peanuts and other proceeds from the donations have been donated to charities,[18] including the rebuilding effort in Greensburg, Kansas,[19] a town that was largely destroyed by a tornado in 2007."

And other silly stuff like that.

Fallout without canon is not Fallout

I'm pretty sure that they won't be referencing any of the new canon from Fallout 3, but will also try not to contradict it, and will set the game far from the East Coast, which is where Bethesda is focusing. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

True, but it begs the question of who gets final say.

Here is an example scenario:

First lets assume that in some alternate dimension we elected a black president (I know its a stretch)

Ok onto the real scenario:

If V13 develops and is out before FO4(kinda doubtful but just for arguments sake) and the folks at gamesas deliver this massive world, they will need to expand on the original history of course, as well as fit NEW factions/cities/organizations (I know Beth avoided that word) into the Fallout Universe, but during this time bethesda is looting the world and decides for FO4 that 'Vault-Tec was actually part of a shadow government that was run by pre-war ghouls who managed to break the time space continuum and thus started the chain of events led to the great war, and you must stop them if you want to try slide out of here and ever return home' or something along those lines. However gamesas has already decided that "Vault-Tec was run by genetically engineered super soldiers who were soldiering their super genetic engineering plan to genetically super engineer soldiers. All of which was tied some how to Muppet Babies."

Who is right?

Somethings affect more than just one coast or another but would span both sides of the US.

If one company creates a new faction/race/creature/item type/skill/perk/trait/cheese bi-product, will the other be allowed to use said idea? Will the cheese bi-product be spreadable?

Only canon is correct - if FOOL (Fallout MMO or Online) follows canon, they can not go wrong. We diehards\hardcoes will love it, PvE will not care as long as it is good content and PvPers can not harm them, and the game will not trip over the Other company's content.

But who decides what IS correct and what ISN'T? Thats my question. They can follow canon sure, but who decides that what they are following is still canon later? Not all of Fallout Tactics is considered Canon but some of it is.

I remember reading something about this when I heard rights were being sold to Bethesda to make Fallout 3. I'm pretty sure there was some fine print that let gamesas keep the rights to a Fallout MMO if they made it within a certain window of time.

Bethesda has the final say on what is and what is not canon along with what is and is not in the game. If they don't like something that gamesas is doing then they can give gamesas 30 days to remedy the point of contention, if the point of contention isn't resolved then Bethesda can pull the rights to the material away from gamesas. Excerpts from the trademark license agreement dealing with this.
5.0 QUALITY CONTROL.

5.1 GENERAL.

5.1.1 gamesas acknowledges the importance to
Bethesda of its reputation and goodwill and to the public of maintaining high,
uniform standards of quality in the Licensed Product provided under the Licensed
Marks as well as related marketing and advertising materials used in connection
with the Licensed Marks.

5.1.2 gamesas warrants that the Licensed Product
shall meet or exceed such quality standards as may be set by Bethesda from time
to time. Without limiting the foregoing, the Licensed Product shall be the same
quality as, or exceed in quality, the quality of the Licensed Product in
connection with which Bethesda has used the Licensed Marks after the Effective
Date.

5.1.3 gamesas agrees that it shall manufacture,
sell, provide, distribute, advertise, and promote the Licensed Product in
accordance with all applicable federal, state, national, territorial and local
laws, regulations, standards and industry codes. gamesas agrees to make or
obtain, at its expense, all necessary governmental approvals, filings, and/or
registrations with respect to gamesas's rights to manufacture, sell,
distribute, provide, advertise, and promote the Licensed Product.

5.2 FORM OF USE. gamesas shall affix or otherwise
display the Licensed Marks in conformance with Bethesda's standards and
guidelines, as such may be further developed or amended from time to time,
including any manuals that are established or approved by Bethesda, and any
other specifications as may be prescribed by Bethesda to promote and foster the
goodwill represented by the Licensed Marks. gamesas shall use the Licensed
Marks with appropriate legends as prescribed by Bethesda and shall not use any
other trademark or service mark (other than gamesas's gamesas marks) in
combination with any of the Licensed Marks without prior written approval of Bethesda.
...
5.3.2 gamesas shall not offer or provide any
products or services whose nature or quality does not comply with the quality
standards of Bethesda.
...
5.4 CONTENT. gamesas agrees that the Licensed Product shall
not contain any material offensive to Bethesda, including, without limitation,
nudity and offensive language or behavior. In any event, gamesas agrees that
prior to release of the Licensed Product such final version of the Licensed
Product shall be approved by Bethesda in writing, which approval shall not be
unreasonably withheld.
...
9.0 TERMINATION.

9.1 Bethesda shall have the right to terminate this Agreement
at any time, upon written notice to gamesas, if gamesas fails to make any
payment due hereunder, maintain the quality of the Licensed Product in
accordance with the provisions hereof, follow Bethesda's instructions regarding
the appropriate display and use of the Licensed Marks, or perform or comply with
any term, condition, or standard set forth in this Agreement, and if such
failure is not cured within thirty (30) days after Bethesda provides written
notice of such failure to gamesas.

9.2 Bethesda may terminate this Agreement at its option,
effective immediately upon written notice to gamesas, in the event (x) of the
reorganization, consolidation or merger of gamesas or of another entity into
gamesas, (y) of the transfer of all or substantially all of the assets of
gamesas to another entity, or (z) gamesas becomes subject to any proceedings
under any bankruptcy or insolvency law, whether domestic or foreign.

We'll see what makes it into the game, the clause is there for more direct control over the product but, other than nudity, doesn't expressly forbid anything. The nudity bit is really no surprise but what I'm interested in finding out is whether or not content like prostitution and drug addicts will make it in, despite at least prostitution being in F3. I haven't read the whole document but I'd imagine that it's full of content controlling clauses in order to enable Bethesda to have the maximum amount of control if they so choose to invoke the clauses (though I'd imagine that's the standard affair for such documents).

Bethesda decides on what is officially canon, but you can of course decide what is part of your own personal canon and what is not. E.g. I personally do consider Van Buren canon. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

Personally, i dont think the main story is important. An intro, and everything else is open ended. The way players create the world the world will be in the end, and each server goes their own way. Maybe i am asking too much. What is important in my opinion is each players story, that should be the focus, i believe that the player must feel that he is affecting the world around him and his character is affected by it aswell. Thats one thing i loved in originals, that each time i played feeled like if i was writting a book, each of them were diffrent. The Sarmatians

geez ... after reading that i kinda hope bethsoft gets uppity and pulls the license, then gamesas could untuck the balls and get to making a real fallout game.

i don't care if its called "tripout" or "fallexit" on the out side of the box, as long as whats inside is fallout I'm happy, but to hear that bethsoft could have some kind of creative control on this makes me shudder.

humm .... could gamesas continue on making this game and just rename stuff they did loose the title? or would everything go into the scrap heap. hay, "OC" ..... i got something for ya right here! _|_ (^.^) _|_

Keep in mind that InXile (founded by Brian Fargo, producer of Wasteland) owns the rights to Wasteland which was the spiritual predecessor to Fallout so it's quite possible that they will produce Wasteland 2, which would most likely resemble Fallout in notable ways.

In regards to FOOL, I'd rather have a Fallout MMO with Chris Taylor at the head than a Fallout MMO by Bethesda or contracted out. If Bethesda develops it, it's clear how they will treat the property (some will be pleased, but I think it's fair to say that many fans would not be). If Bethesda contracts it out there is a chance of a repeat of what happened with the Star Trek license, which ended up with a series of games which were criticized by critics and fans alike.

That said, we're going off on even more of a tangent than before and one that probably won't be very fruitful (well the former has potential [better suited for the Bar?] but the latter doesn't seem to have much any place productive to go [probably best suited for it's own topic if we want to find out]).
