I'm on vacation at the beach this week, and as I sit here by the waves (drinking my beer) I'm imaging all manner of sea creatures and monsters lurking around out there. What have been some of your favorite aquatic beings? Please list any creatures from any media, even those that you may have thought up on your own.

Godzilla, hands down. I've loved Godzilla since I was a kid. Just a giant monster that dwells in the depths of the sea that wakes at the sign of human arrogance and destroys everything.

Murlocs and Argonians. Would be nice, as a tourist on a beach, all of a sudden a murloc vs argonian all out war right there in front of you.

This as well as Sirens even though they might not be from the sea. But they do sing beautifully :violin:

I think Sirens are associated with the sea and therefore appropriate for this list. Also Medusa!

I think the sea creatures that have been dominating my imagination lately are the Lovecraftian terrors that are said to dwell in the oceans' depths.

The Sirens of Greek mythology were originally bird-like creatures, though they still frequently worked to lure sailors to the doom. So while they didn't live under the ocean, they were still by-and-large seabound. Also, unless you're talking about the jellyfish, Medusa was a very landbound gal.

Wasn't she associated with Poseidon?

Well, the general story is that Poseidon copulated with Medusa in a temple to Athena, who punished the woman for defiling her temple by turning her into a gorgon. Of course, the story can vary from place to place. Some say Medusa was wooed by Poseidon, some say she seduced him, and others claim that he [censored] her.

The Greeks worshipped a bunch of jerkwads. :P

Haha, the Greek gods are interesting, I'll give them that!

Re: Medusa

Story I heard was that she was originally an acolyte of Athena and was [censored] by Poseidon in the temple to Athena in which she served. Athena, being the jealous diety that she is, turned Medusa into a Gorgon. Now Gorgons, they were the spawn of sea deities. I guess this is where I got the association with the sea for Medusa.

My initial response would be the Kraken! But, the more I think about it, I think I'm much more partial to the Leviathan. The great Sea Serpent, hundred/s of feet in length, able to crush multiple ships in the coils of it's body, and can move incredibly fast through the water. Something about it terrifies me yet excites me at the same time.

Swamp Thing.

Plus a special mention for the Killer Whale in Futurama (Episode: 300 Big Ones).

Jellyfish. Nothing special, just jellyfish. Imagine you're swimming in the sea and all of a sudden you find yourself swimming through a bloom/swarm of jellyfish. All of their tentacles, spiny and poisonous, wrapping around your hands and feet, fingers, face, neck, up your swim shorts... awful. Just awful. And I don't know if you're been stung by jellyfish before but they really cling on, and even the little ones feel like so many wasp stings. I hate jellyfish.

I was going to suggest kelpies at first but they are specific to inland waters so went for the oceanic selkies instead, to fit with the thread title. They're both really cool beings though. Have you ever seen the film Ondine by Neil Jordan? A lonely Irish fisherman with a sick daughter pulls up a woman in his nets at sea, who may or may not be a selkie. The daughter is convinced that she is...
