I, upon reading some of the works of Plutarch, have been thinking.

If I were forced at gunpoint to pick just one it would be Virgil. The Aeneid is to me a marvel. There is one scene in particular that always stuns me. It is when Aeneas enters Carthage and sees a mural depicting the Trojan war. He is filled with sorrow as he sees people he knew depicted on the wall.

But what really grabs me is when he sees himself depicted in the mural. I have always thought that was a brilliant scene. It strikes me as a very modern moment, a self-aware moment. Aeneas understands that he is becoming a legend even as he stands in the temple observing the mural.

I prefer John Dryden's translation over the others I have read. It feels remarkably natural to me, not stilted or over-reverent as so many translations of ancient literature can be. There are passages in his translation that, in my opinion, work as poetry in their own right as well as being a very readable translation.

More likely he doesn't love any. The vast majority of people don't read ancient writers.

Unless I'm forgetting anything, and not counting the little bits of philosophy I read at university, the only classical text I've read is the Odyssey. So I suppose I have to say Homer is my favourite, if only by default.

I have both the Iliad and the Aeneid sat on my bookshelf though, so one day I will expand my horizons. I read a really fascinating book about the Persian War last year too, so at some point I'd really like to read Herodotus' Histories.
