Well you learn something new everyday

Did you know that there is an actual 'Breton' language in the real world? Breton is still spoken as an everyday language by about 200,000 people. It is a Brythonic language, descended from the Celtic British language brought from Great Britain to Armorica by migrating Britons during the Early Middle Ages.

Do you think Bethesda realised this when creating the Elder Scrolls games and its History/Lore? Can you spot any links or similarities between real world Breton language and ES Breton language and or culture/History?

I would like to hear if anyone else has found any other examples of 'real life' things which may have played a part in some way in influencing Bethesda when they created the ES World/Universe.

Please dont turn this thread into a political or abusive thread by saying anything negative about a real world country and/or its people/language/culture. For example, dont say 'the Imperials are obviously the Romans' and then proceed to say anything negative, or which may be seen as abusive, to Roman History or Italy and its people.

Another example that I can think of where the real world is reflected/inspired into the Elder Scroll World is coinage. The design of the head on a gold septim is very similar to that of real life old or ancient coinage where the 'likeness' of an important person, usually that of the Emperor or Ruler, is the chosen image because it is seen as a 'unifying' and/or 'commonly recognisable' symbol for the peoples to use who live there

Nice find.
There is a small list of these things on the wiki site also. I can't think any others I'd have found during my adventures..
  • The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/East_Empire_Company is a reference to the East India Company.
  • http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sovngarde and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sovngarde have very notable similarities to Asgard and Valhalla respectively from Norse myth.
  • The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Poetic_Edda sought by the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Bards_College_(Faction) reflects a collection of texts of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetic_Edda from Old Norse culture.
  • A http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mammoth can be found directly east of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Frostflow_Lighthouse, frozen into the side of a glacier with arrows and what appear to be prehistoric spears embedded in its hide. The arrows find in the mammoth appear to be Dwarven, hinting that the Dwemer may have killed this beast.
  • http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/High_Hrothgar is obviously named after Hrothgar, the real life king of Denmark who was also a character in the epic poem Beowulf.
