What DLC to get frist? DM or HH?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:48 am

Been a long while since I played NV. I never did get Dead Money when the DLC came out since I still had so much to do in NV. Well I don't really rememeber what my character was doing in my game a few months ago, and it seems almost new, so I am thinking of starting a new game again.

My son wants a new DLC for NV. So I only have 1000 xbox points so I can only get one. I am not sure what to get. One of the reasons why I never got it was because at the time I didn't feel like having an Operation Anchorage or Mothership Zeta type DLC is where once you start it, you have to complete it. Is Honest Hearts the same? Once you start you have to finish it? I know you can visit it again after completing it like The Pitt, but not sure if it's like the Pitt as well, once started it needs to be completed before going back to the wasteland. I loved Point Lookout, but I HATED bullet sponges. I like MZ but again more bullet sponges which I hated playing the DLC for a while. I can't remember if I read that DM had bullet sponges or not.

Without any spoilers, which one has the better perks? Which has the better gear or reward loot? I don't know much about HH yet, too many spoilers so I can't be reading much, but from what I read about DM, I am don't feel like I really want it. Seeems too dark, and just like OA or MZ it's just shoot shoot shoot. I want more roll playing abit, something like The Pitt. I know from what I have read, that HH is pretty short but great story. I have read mixed reviews about DM, but didn't read much because of spoilers.

So without any major spoilers, what DLC do you guys and gals suggest and why?

Yes, once you enter HH you have to finish it before you can leave/go back to the vanilla Mojave again.

The rest...I haven't played DM (it didn't sound like it'd be for me), only HH, so I'll leave the comparison to others who have. :) Edit: Will say that my impression is that HH is more free-roaming like the original game, DM is more restricted.

After reading a bit, HH seems to be for me, I don't like being restricted like OA (it was fun and I loved the changed of pace, but doing it 4 or 5 times with different DLC in FO3, kinda boring and reptitive now) and love to explore and free roam. Well it's an early nite for me, so no more reading, time for bed.

Hope to read more comments and opnions.

I'm assuming that's your son in your avatar? He seems a bit young to be playing New Vegas, let alone getting DLC for it.

So, get Dead Money. There's more F-bombs in that one, and it's much scarier.

Get Honest Hearts. Its more "fun" than dead money. Dead money is really annoying and not exactly all fun and games, you have very few choices you can make and there is nothing to expore in dead money. Its mainly focused on dialogue and slow paced gameplay

Dead Money is much more challenging and survival oriented. HH is more fun and you get better stuff.

Not that HH is necessarily 'better', but it is more fun.

Canonically, get Dead Money first. But if you aren't at max level, then I would get HH because I hear that it is on the easer side of things, but DM is not a DLC you want to go charging in to with a Level 14 character.

Dead Money was much better than HH IMO. However dead money is not for the people who like to run and gun and don't usually play RPGs. Dead Money is challenging and has an intriguing plot. Honest Hearts is good for exploring but it's far too easy I'd get both if I were you. However I'd get DM if I could only get one.

Dead Money was the best game playinb experience I ve seen in fo3 or fo nv. You will have to use your brain a little to survive. Be sure to play DM on HC mode.

Loot? how does walking out of DM with over 35,000 caps worth of pre war money anc gold bars sound? Also a B.A.R. and some 16 dt armour that says security on the back.

Dead Money is a challenge that stands alone in fo3 or nv. Nothing is comparable or close to it. Think of it as fo3 Tranquility Lane on really horrible nasty mean steroids.

Haven t played HH yet (PS3), but I can tell by this board its not as good. Not enough crying about "too hard" or "got lost" or " stupid "cloud" or "stupid speakers". There are no high hp enemies in DM.

Even you are not a bullet sponge in HC mode. DM is for patient people. Ones that think before they act. There are many many ways to die in DM. in HC mode.

The story is good too. Very well written all around.... DM is a once in a lifetime deal. HH sounds like the rest of new fallout

From what you've said, I think you'll prefer HH. You are stuck in both DLCs until it's completed, but you can go back to HH once it's completed if you want (although some of the main characters disappear, inc. the only one you can trade with).
Imo, the story in DM is far richer, and you have to think more about your actions (I wouldn't describe either DLC as a run and gun), but if you're interested in Joshua Graham, then HH is definitely the story you'll want to hear/play. The survivalist is also brilliant in HH, and will satisfy you exploring urges. I can't remember what the perks for each DLC were, but even then, what was considered the better lot would depend on your character build anyway I think.
DM is much, much darker though, so another reason for going for HH if that's not your thing.
Overall, my favourite is DM, but HH sounds much more like your cup of tea, and it is a great DLC. But when you've got some cash to spare, you should definitely get DM in the future, just for the change of pace I reckon. :)

What? There's more choices in Dead Money than in Honest Hearts.
You can also explore the villa if you want to.

I would go ahead and get Dead Money after Honest Hearts if free-roam is your thing. Just be sure to get it though. It's a really good addition to Fallout.

Thank you everyone for your help. Yes that is my son, but that was taken 7 years ago, just after he saved over a 250 hour Morrowind game while I was at work.

I am downloading HH right now. I am at level 12, so I don't think DM is for me right now. I will be getting DM because of the comments I have read here, I love to roll play, but just for now, I don't want something too hard. Also I think my son will have more fun with HH if DM is suppose to be a bit hard, but I will definently get DM later when once I hit level 20.

I would like to thank everyone who post, thank you so much, you have helped me decide what to get. Now I know to get HH first, but I need to get DM later, but not at an early level.

That should be a good choice considering the level of your character. Both DLCs gave me many hours of entertainment. By the time you finish HH, your character should be strong enough to wander over to DM at any time afterwards. DM (even with a sometimes frustrating and difficult ending) was one of my favorite DLCs.

I also found HH to be easier (particularly the final quest) than DM. Enjoy HH. Lots of stuff to explore while roaming around the area.

imo, dead money is only good for the rewards. I found the combat and map to be redundant and the red cloud is just an eye-sore, doesn't really add any spookiness to it. And the whole speaker thing is so annoying, you'll end up hating speakers more than anything else in the world when you play this. In the end, it's a very controlled environment, forcing you to play a very controlled and redundant way.

HH in terms of gameplay and story is 1000x better.

I would get HH first, complete this as it seems alot easier than Dead Money, (but i was 28 when entering HH, rather than the 21 i did in Dead Money)

HH seems alot quicker to do (even exploring and most/all side quests), i felt more enclinded to actually follow the storyline in DM rather than HH..

Just me though..

I never ate a single bit of food in fallout until DM. In there i was eating Blamco Mac n Cheese, Sugar Bombs, anything i could get my hands on to save on Stimpaks. When I found the indoor beds I sang to the heavens.

That right there made it very cool for me. Exploring the Villa was fun for me too, finding all the little apartments you could get into while fighting the cloud all the while.

The speakers were fun too, just took patience. The holograms were bit of a joke compared to some things in old school video games. Especially with high repair and sneak.

DM is all about balancing factors. Cautious exploration vs hardcoe Cloud damage. Stuff like that. It's also about letting go. :D
