Why did Bethesda make the elves so hideous?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:42 pm

Is it because their artists are terrible or they think elves should look like goblins?

Elves just are supposed to look like that in TES.

And Falmer are snow elves, and they are now practically goblins :teehee:

Yep. Tolkien never existed on Nirn to pretty them up.

I don't think all elves look bad, but it does annoy me how it isn't possible to make the playable character look anything like some of the ones in-game.

For example Karliah has an eye colour not available to players, and that bugs me.

Perhaps they're hideous for you. Every race in Skyrim its an improvement over old games in my opinion, even if not enough sometimes.

I personally love the Skyrim elves - especially the Bosmer! Huge improvement over their Oblivion counterparts.

They don't really look bad; they look awfully serious... and sad too. Like they had lost their home. Oh wait! :)

Yeah, no question about that. High elves no longer look like they have bananas for heads :P And i too like the rough look of the elves, it gives them character.

But if you want pretty elves, http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197988732882/screenshot/596970359686333978?tab=public ;)

i view it as an upgrade compared to the old games. cant really complain about thier looks.

NOW their height, ow ya! So tired that everyones the same size. Nords and high elves supposed to tower over bosmers especially. It shouldnt be a 1 inch difference between the nords and bosmers if its even that more like almost a foot. i should be looking down at them if playing a nord instead of not really being able to tell a difference between them and imperials.....

I like the look of elves because they look different to what they're stereotype normally is i.e vain pretty boys. I normally don't like elves altogether and wont play as one altogether except the ones in TES.

I think the devs have put all their effort to make only Cicero looks tiny in this game :bunny: well, apart from the "adorable" non-adoptable and "divers" children of course.

This is also how they looked in Morrowind and they look very ''alien'' compared to the human characters. Personally I love this, it sets them apart from the humans. They aren't supposed to be pretty for humans to look at. At the same time I have a cute Bosmer female, majestical Altmer and a cool looking Dunmer, so I have no issues with this.

The only reason why they looked more human in Oblivion was because Bethesda's character creator was more limited. Even Orcs looked like humans! I'm happy that in Skyrim they regained their unique appearance.

Ever looked in third person? I was surprised at how short my Breton looked compared to the Nords he was standing beside. It's less noticeable than Oblivion, but that's neither a good nor bad thing. I personally think that they made Bosmer too short in Oblivion.

I think all the mer look great, especially the Orsimer. They actually look interesting now. But, I never liked the "elves are always beautiful/handsome" trope in games anyway, because what that seemed to really mean in practice was that "elves are always a pointy eared version of whatever passes for beautiful/handsome on TV at the moment".
