Why does everything level scale with us except quest awards?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:58 pm

I've never understood the point of getting a super awesome item at level 5 and then having it be useless at level 35. I'm really surprised Bethesda didn't have our items auto-level with us, too.

The better way to do it would be to have set levels for everything.

with maybe a range of 2/3 levels in either direction.

Level scaling ruins these games IMO.

Your question has a false assumption. Not everything scales with level. Many enemies will never scale.

There's only like 4 scaled items in the entire game. Daedric Shrine rewards aren't scaled.

Getting a set of uber-armor early in the game, and then have that armor scale with your level all the way to endgame would be poor game design.

If all your items scaled with level, what incentives or rewards would you have to complete more content? I know if I got a set up uber-gear at level 5, I'd be pretty bored just hacking and slashing the rest of the way to the endgame.

I may be wrong, but I think that weapon damage is affected a great deal by our skill with that weapon type, be it one handed, two handed or bow... UESP appears to have a list of weapon base damage if you care not for spoilers.

Yeah feels rather wierd.. Realised this when i did Civil War quest's and after taking a town (Not a fort) Ulfric said "You have shown bla bla bla.. To show you how much we appreciate your strength, and love for Skyrim and her people, i award you with this.." (Or similar) [Leather tunic added]..

That was just.. WoW... :D

no incentive to go out an get better stuff if it just gets better with you

I'm talking specifically about the leveled awards you get for certain quests. If you complete a quest at level 4, then perhaps the sword you get deals 15 damage. If you had waited, though, and received it at level 30, then the sword would deal like 25 damage. I'm not talking about every item leveling with your character.

That is even worse, because that means most of the "cool" stuff you are supposed to go out and find in the game is just [censored] not worth having.

Yes, however if you got that quest sword and they gave you the best version of it, you'd be toting that piece of equipment throughout the entire game with no need to replace it.

I don't think some of you are understanding what I mean by leveled-items. See http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Chillrend#Leveled_Statistics If you did this quest at the very beginning of the game, you would get the first level of the sword. However, if you waited until level 25, you would get the best version of the sword.

With this mechanic, though, your early rewards (which are supposed to be a reminder of your earlier adventures) quickly become useless as you gain a few levels. This wouldn't be a problem if these leveled quest rewards leveled up with you. So when you hit level 5, your Chillrend sword would also become a bit stronger, too.

I'm not saying ALL weapons and armor should level up, just the leveled quest awards. There was a fantastic mod for Oblivion that fixed this problem. If Bethesda doesn't utilize this feature, I'm hoping the mod's original creator does the same thing for Skyrim.

We understand exactly what you're saying. But the point still stands. If you got that piece of equipment early game, and if that piece of equipment got better as you leveled, the game would lose any incentive to get better gear. Removing the need for rewards throughout the game would make for a boring experience.

than go do another qeust to recieve new gear scaled to your level
not like there's not enough to do/find in the world
stop meta-gaming and play the damn game

if you need lists on the internet to find the best weapons at the optimal levels you're really missing the point IMO

That answer shows entirely that you don't get what he's saying... What he's saying, is lets say, I do the first dragon quest in Whiterun when I first get there, at for example, level 10, the axe would be as it currently is currently in game, it wouldn't level with me, and it would become obsolete as I gain levels and I would need to replace it with something better. However, if I decide when I get to Whiterun, "naw I don't wanna do the main quest right now, I'ma wander down to Riften and do some thieves guild quests first", so I go do some thieves guild quests, and I get to level 25, and I come back to Whiterun, ready to kill me that dragon. Now I'm level 25, the axe the Jarl gives me has slightly better damage than it would have if I had done the quest at level 10, damage more appropriate to my level, so that its not just vendor trash... again it wouldn't level with me, and it would become obsolete as I gain levels and I would need to replace it with something better, it would just not be useless to begin with.

Edit: Reread his post above yours (which I totally only read the first paragraph of earlier...) and I apologize to DenverRalphy apparently he does want the weapons to scale with him... and I agree that's silly.'

Fallout New Vegas had no level scaling and that turned out to be terrible. It made the game linear.
