Why so much hatred? Bubsy games of the 90s

Post » Thu Mar 02, 2017 7:53 pm

For those of you who remember Bubsy the cat, why was he hated on so much? I grew up playing Bubsy on the SNES and PlayStation. Sure there were times I was ready to throw my controller across the room, but there are plenty of other games that do that too.

I never expected Bubsy to ever be talked about on these forums.

Anyways, I have never played any of the Bubsy games, so take what I say with a grain of salt. From what I understand, people hate Bubsy because they felt he was a carbon copy of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the controls and physics of the games were particularly terrible. I believe the game was also pretty hyped before release, which somewhat augmented the disappointment many people felt.

I remember the controls like it was yesterday. Yeah they svcked. A lot. But there are plenty of games I remember that had crappy controls (ex: Jurassic Park on the Sega). I could see how Bubsy was a spinoff of Sonic, too.

I remember Bubsy! I played Bubsy 3D on the PlayStation a bit when I was younger. Don't remember a lot about it to be honest.

I heard of Bubsy but never played it, from what I've heard the 2D Bubsy where alright but the 3D one was the one that broke the camel's back.

The 3D game gets hate because it's a mess. :P

I don't recall the 2D games having a negative backlash, except that they clearly aren't as good as Mario, Sonic, etc.

(The market was over-saturated with "animal mascot platformers" at the time, and many were just lesser knock-offs.)

But I do remember renting them a few times when I was younger.

Like wise I have never heard of it but then in the 90's I did not play on the consoles, I played only on PC since that was where the games that I liked to play were on.

I do not even recall Sonic the Hedgehog.

I'm looking at the game design, and I'm wondering how can there be any hype around that? :P Especially since it wasn't even a new concept by a long shot. Maybe they were just hoping it'll be an easy piece of the commercial cake merely because platformers were a huge thing then.

The 2D Bubsy games were average at best, there were WAY worse mascot platformers back then. The hatred comes from the really bad 3D PS1, where it looks like a pre-alpha textureless game.

Makes you think that it is a pre-alpha game and someone at Eidetic said, "Okay that looks good enough, release it" . "But sir the game is still in its Alpha stage!"
