Well ive had the same gear for what has seemed like ages, and the same terrible looking steel battleaxe. Well leveling smithing I learned how to smelt dwarven, so I smelted up a dwarven battle axe only to realize my skyforge steel battleaxe is superior? Is that a joke? Both axes superior through the grindstone.

*Potential spoiler* If you learn about the Skyforge, it is supposedly the best forge in all of Skyrim, and the oldest as well. So, perhaps that is the reason why.

If that's the case why doesn't he just forge his next axe at the skyforge?
I'm guessing everything is better if it's made at the skyforge. That's prolly why it has an awesome name like "skyforge"
No, it's not. Skyforge Steel weapons are sold by Gray-Mane only after you join the Companions. You can't make them and the forge has no affect on anything you craft.
