Why there are no female giants

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:09 pm

On the serious note - they're in their homes/hidden camps like Velothi mountains.

On the Sheogorath note - they were all eaten by the Giant Mudcrabs, along with the female Mammoths.

I'd usually be the one to join in with the 'let us have this make sense in-game' crowd but I really want Giant females to look different from the males.

It's odd but I never noticed it until now.
Like when Bioware didn't bother making female turians, salarians, etc in the first two games (I haven't played the third so I don't know if they appear in that). At first I was thinking that it wasn't an especially big deal, though a bit immersion-breaking, until I asked myself "Would people have noticed if it were the reverse?"

It seems like 'maleness' is considered more normal, or something.
I've just woken up so I'm not entirely making sense.

Before anyone jumps me, I don't think the omition of female turians or Giants or Imperial guards is active sixism.

I was just thinking about this giant thing the other day, ha! It really is one of those things that you can't help but be irked by it once you notice it. (Sort of like followers and npcs constantly clearing their throats or coughing.) And yes, it does end up that maleness is the default very often, but it's mostly unconcious. It's always more 'notable' when a fictional race is all female or a cast has a large number of women because it doesn't happen as often.

But since there are no female giants, weird fan theories begin to fill the gaps in the most disturbing of ways...I like to think that giants are grown from giant toes planted in the ground.

I'm loving the giant toe planting theory. It's my favourite so far.

Also, yes, the fact that all the followers and NPCs seem to have throat infections annoys the pants off me. It's one of the many reasons I wanted my Dohvakiin to be able to turn around and throttle Lydia.

I love this thread.

Maybe all the females were the test subjects for the Nordic Space Program? Could also explain why they've been in decline recently. Though, I think Dovahkiin could also be the reason for that. :P

On the contrary, that is exactly right. Not just in video games, either.

what you dont know is that there was a specific directive by the higher ups in bethesda studios to NOT include female giants... Why? giant children... if giant females were included in the game the obvious next step would be giant children, they did not set out to flesh out the species of giants...

they specifically avoided giant females because they were really avoiding giant babies... that would've just called attention to the fact that there are actually only two young persons in this game... that seem to have been cloned and passed out after being exposed to copious amounts of modern day culture... and given an invincibility forever/ never grow up/ be a little [censored] serum...

so they wanted to avoid giant babies...

"how do we do that? no female giants..." problem solved

they should have at least give us a book named: Where have the Giantwives go? detailing Giants culture,/legends, and so on.

and you mentioned children....I want all other Major Races to have children representatives. Maybe not for Lizards and Cats - it would be a little problematic....you know kitttens and eggs/hatchlings....

Well since nobody has said it yet, I will-
They have probably evolved into some twisted homosixual species that reproduce asixually, most likely by budding.

And you thought I was going to say they are gay.
They wouldn't be homosixual if they reproduced asixually.

Giant lore books would be wonderful. I think there's one or two but I'd have gotten a kick out of having one book shelf devoted to the big dudes.

Female "giants" are actually the opposite of males, being very, very small. The males, for reasons best known to themselves, keep them secreted away in purpose built pouches in their loincloths.

You can read all about it here, in this post that I just made up.

Hmmm, funnily enough, there's been a change to the UESP Lore : Dwemer page. It is now the Dwemer were named Dwarves by the Giants of the Velothi mountains. It used to be 'the giants, the Ehlnofey of the Velothi mountains'. If the latter were the case, there might be a case for their being non reproducing and biologically immortal. Not any more, though, or this issue would be a lot simpler.

Anyway, as much as they strive for realism, the province is a representation. The towns are too small, the people too few, it's not Skyrim, it's 'what you can fit of Skyrim in a reasonably sized game with a 30:1 timescale'. There will always be stuff that is supposed to be there that isn't actually in-game.

Not if male giants are also born really small and just grow quickly.

I think the mating itself would be more worrisome.

I do hate it when they build half a race, but I like the idea of them being immortal.

I was thinking more centaur and.... Woman carried off by centaur. If the giantesses were small enough to fit in a pocket, they'd be the size of toddlers. I certainly wouldn't want to ah... "Mate" with the males if I was that much smaller. :blush2:

Giants don't necessarily need to have both male and females to reproduce.

They're all hermaphroditic and can both father and bear children -- Wait -- Where are the children? Never mind.
