I never downloaded tad last PS3 firmware. It was that optional security one. Does being current help with LAG?

why you haven't downloaded the latest firmware for your console...

it's nothing to do with your game....2 different things....

Usually it's mandatory. The last one was an optional firmware and it was released a while ago. Way before Skyrim. In Gstaff's post he said to have latest firmware installed as well as patch 1.1. I've had the patch installed since launch. Does optional PS3 firmware 3.73 actually help with LAG?

It did actually did help me!!

The description for the update 3.73 says: "Playback quality during use of some PlayStation?3 format software has been improved."

Mine use to freeze and lag horribly after about fifteen minutes, but after the update i played for about three hours with only minor frame rate drops here and there.
And my save file size dropped from 7mb down to 6.2

After you installed the firmware, did you uninstall and reinstall the game?
