Is it worth it to buy the game in it's current state at the moment? I've actually been wanting the game since release date but I figured it would be better to buy it after I finished some rather important things in order to save myself the distraction. Then I heard that Patch 1.2 was coming after Thanksgiving, which I was very happy about since I would have finished my work, and some bugs were going to be fixed! Now Patch 1.2 has come, and I was just about ready to pick up the game this Friday but of course something goes awry, and the patch turns out to be a total mess. Is it still worth it to buy the game, or should I wait it out until it's more stable? Also I kind of feel like EVERYONE is having terrible problems with the game, but the fact is that most people are only on the technical forums BECAUSE they're having problems, so that's why it seems like the entire skyrim-playing population bugging out. Is the quantity of people bugging out over exaggerating? Should I get the game?!

P.S. People have been saying new game files have not been affected by the patch, so this is pull me towards buying the game, but some concrete confirmations would be nice. Please and thank you. .

Edit: So that's a few people haven't run into any problems. Considering that Bethesda already has a patch coming along the way next week, should I just given and buy the game, and play on 1.2, and pray nothing explodes until the next patch? Because I haven't bought a new game since July, and I've been itching to play something new and shiny.

It's a very strange peeve of mine but I want my achievements to have the date stamp under them, so I refuse to play offline. It's a bit weird, but I'll be willing to sacrifice a broken save file, or a few days of gaming for it

You can just play offline for now.

Even though the game has some major problems, I still think it's worth buying. It's AMAZING...

This game is amazing if you can get it to work. If you're that worried about 1.2 then you could just play without connecting to the internet (at least on the 360. Not sure about PS3 or Steam versions) and play the release version.

Salted it sounds like that a good choice for you would be to wait. 1.2 is scary; hell 1.1 had enough broken quests. I only installed it because I wanted to see for myself and I'd pretty much decided before that I'm putting the game down for a while and waiting on another patch.

Maybe, but with the game breaking bugs running amok such as broken quest lines, impossible to kill dragons, and the fact that resistances and weaknesses have pretty much died, I don't think I'd be enjoying the game all that much..

1.2 replaced 1.1, so no.

It is an ambitious game, but there are glaring issues that give you the sense that a lot of testing was skipped. Especially concerning this last patch, which has completely stopped me from trying to play.

Is it worth buying? Heck yea. I played the game for 90 hours on my first character and I didn't run into ANY bugs that I could tell, other than the odd graphical glitch or a freeze now and then. The first bug I have run into is having "Blood on the ice" quest being seemingly broken because a key NPC has vanished (probably dead since there's no quest marker for it) and that wasn't so much a bug as a "Well, that's life for you!" lol..

Anyway, I'm sure I'll run into more at some point, but I'm not really concerned too much about it. I think the biggest issues come from when trying to complete some of the bigger quests (such as the main one and the ones where you pick sides in the war) and also trying to complete a bunch of lesser quests all at the same time. The scripts and whatnot seem to have troubles when you have multiple active quests that overlap in some way and you are trying to complete them at the same time. If you are really concerned about running into the bugs and whatnot then I suggest focusing on one quest at a time and completing them before you really start into any others (especially ones that seem like they might be fairly big in terms of how it might effect the "world"... especially when they are located in the same area).

Having rented it to try it out I'm just going to wait for the GOTY or whatever now so I don't have to deal with Bethesda's ham-handed approach to patching that took an entire year to fix New Vegas.

I would like to note that the bug with "Blood on the ice" was encountered on my second char that has probably 50-60 hours on it (that I'm currently playing), so it's very very possible to play this game and not run into anything that's game breaking or even quest stopping.

I would have liked some kind of comment other than "we are investigating" by now. I enjoyed this game so much, now I am not even trying to play it.

Oh, and about the patch updating and whatnot...

You can simply decline to download the patch and it should pop you back to the game. The only negative to doing this is that you won't be able to gain achievements since it won't allow an unpatched game to connect to Xbox Live.

i think youd be perfectly fine.

i believe the majority of issues are with people running existing games/saves after patching.

im running a new game, because i didnt bother playing the 360 version until it was patched, and i dont have the issues that most are ranting about.

I would wait for GOTY edition. All patched and with all the expansions.

Skyrim's got a long way to go before it beats other polished titles for goty.

I've been recommending that people not buy the game till it's either in reasonable working order or they at least remove patch 1.2. Bethesda doesn't deserve their money at this time.

I have to agree. Normally I'm pretty large on bugs and fresh releases, I understand the complexity of the game and mechanics. It's also what makes the games great for me, the size and details. I haven't had many problems with skyrim either beside textures and quest bugs, but it's no biggie or game breaker to me. Can be annoying yes but still have to be fair.

Maybe it's because I don't play a whole lot of RPG's, just some franchises like bethesdas and some other titles. But have to admit I've never experienced anything like skyrim before, meaning their development/patch management, and I'm an oldskool gamer and collector.

With 1.2 I turned completely 180 degrees and pretty tired of it; I don't recommend the game to anyone, I hate wasting time and hours of gameplay, just for them to break the experience, it's not ok and it's not fair to the users. I doubt they'll come around the issues in another patch, makes times some, I'm 100% sure we're the testers and I don't like that kinda business. The feedback is none existing and I don't think they take it seriously.

The bugs aren't nearly as common for many people. Its just that the people with the bugs would be the first to post. I have played 110+ hours on 360 and had 2 bugs on side quests, and that is it. Nothing game breaking.

I agree - 140 hours in and no quest breaking bugs (at least persistent ones - I come back in a few weeks if things are stuck [like Vex was for me] and they have unstuck. Only one is bugged for me right now, but I'm not giving up.

I do have a handful of items stuck as quest-related in my inventory, but that is a minor annoyance.

However, I wouldn't be playing this game if I was forced to use 1.2. No point. Dragons flying backwards is one thing. Resistances being rendered useless is game breaking.

So that's two people above me who didn't have any problems, a long with a few others. Considering that Bethesda already has a patch coming along the way next week, should I just given and buy the game, and play on 1.2 until the next patch? Theres no guarantee what the next patch will do lol. Basically when you buy a Bethesda game you are buying a beta until they get it patched. Hell, I have fallout 3 on PC and some things are broken in that game were never patched, and couldn't be modded in last time I checked. Like targeting grenades and rockets in the air. Works on my friend's Xbox but not on my PC. Skyrim I bought on Xbox, and depending on how well Bethesda treats it post release I might get it on PC too. So if you buy this game be ready for the possibility of:

Major Quest Lines becoming broken.
Minor Quests becoming broken.
No resistances or weaknesses on anything anywhere. (This probably will happen to you.)
Performance issues and freezes. (On xbox I don't freeze but maybe once and only after playing a long time, hours and hours. Usually on a loading screen)

Eventually most of this will be worked out... probably. If you are buying for a PS3 definitely wait. If you are gonna get the game anyway no matter what, pull the trigger and play it till your tired of it. Once you come back to it you will probably have a more polished game. I've done over a 100 hours before 1.2 and had a good time, but when they broke resistances and I noticed more stuttering on my xbox, I decided to put it down for a while. Was a really fun couple weeks of skyrim though.
