Xbox 350 freeze screen

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 6:33 pm

Always be sure the console is not close to any heat source, like your TV for example - and never have the console closed in a locker or something.. give it loads of air. My Xbox is standing behind my TV, standing on top of my receiver, but none of the components radiate enough heat to affect the system. My TV gets hot, yeah.. it's a 50" Plasma, so it radiates a lot og heat, but not from the rear - in the distance it's standing. I burnt down a PC motherboard, with water-cooling, by standing in a closed locker - my bad.........

My Xbox is no-where near any other electrical appliances, and has plenty of space around it. It only occurs with Skyrim - I've never had any form of lock-up with any other games. Odd.

Well I experience .. wow [censored], it just froze on me .. the same. Very scarcely, but still it does so - and it svcks when it does. But I save manually, frequently. Right now I just need to live with it until a fix gets in place - unless I choose to follow the tip of uninstalling the game, clearing the cache and reinstalling with the new patch. Bummer!

Over the last few days I've had at least 7 or 8 crashes which lock up the 360 requiring console reset (mostly happens when talking to the NPCs you can have a conversation with). I think its pretty much broken, as I had no problems for 69.5 hours then all of a sudden constant freezing. Might just have to start a fresh character and wait for patches to fix original one.

EDIT: Make that 9 crashes/freezes <_<
Definitely think my issues are related to talking to NPC's I was trying to talk to the mage in the Winterhold inn and a few seconds in it froze which is what seems to happen with everyone I talk to now...

I think the overload of AI makes the problem.. all what your character is made of, determines the crashes. Just keep saving more and more frequently, before, in between and after missions. Some days I can play many hours without it crashing, but when something heavy goes down - BAM! it's stuck. Right now my game crashed just jumping into a silly river - probably due to my character build, entering the underwater 'world'. Sometimes I also crash between area loads - entering one area from the other through fast-travel. Kind of svcks, but due to the reason I save a lot, I don't lose big progress..

You misunderstood my post, or at least the extra edit bit at the end.
The game crashes/freezes when I talk to any NPC in any location. So I might get away with doing a few quests already active, that don't require talking to anyone but after that I'll be completely stuck until a patch is released (if at all).

Ok dude, try uninstalling the game (not your saves), clear the HDD cache, and reinstalling the game with the new patch... I'm sure it'll help, becuase just clearing the cache solved a mayor portion of crashing for me!

This was happening to me multiple times daily. I had over 200 saves at the time. I put in a thumb drive, copied my last save to it and started playing off of it, and the game is fast once again. So my advice is delete all those old saves.

Already tried that earlier, and no joy. I'll try again tomorrow with patch 1.2 and if that doesn't work then I'll try Ahman's method of copying a save to a USB drive and use that for further saves.

Hope my tone in previous posts didn't cause offence PsiZombie, you can imagine having put 70 hours in and basically not being able to get any new quests, I've not really been in a jolly mood when it comes to Skyrim.

ok maybe i should have posted some help rather then be smart ass like i was being earlyer. I also had a freezing problem where it took almost 10 mins to load the game and when i would do anything in my inv it too about 2 mins to drop items or store them in my house, I then started wondering wtf is going on so i reviewed some quests and finished them thinking it could be an active quest causing the problem, Welp it still froe bad so I started going threw my inven when i noticed something way out of place. Some how I managed to get over 45,000 of the same key, Dont ask me how or why but I had 45,000+ of the same key on me, I went outside my house found a barrel and placed all but 1 of that key in the barrel went back in my house saved my game and reloaded skyrim. That seemed to fix my problem, I dont know if you have duplicated items like I did but it really effected alot of gameplay because of it so check out all your stuff.

I was just about to post a new thread about this and I'll be sure to drop GStaff a PM about this so he can start gathering info on it.

Essentially, it's this. I have my game installed and it crashes daily, I uninstall it and play from disc and the framerate gets worse but it never crashes and of course (pre-patch) the textures are always fully rendered. I have over 205 hours clocked, nearly 800 saves, but I deleted most of them and moved critical saves to my USB Memory Stick. I clear the cache and I have the autosaves on Wait/Rest and Character Menu turned off. Only Save on Travel is active. I keep about 8 alternating manual saves and the 3 Autosaves active. If I enter the Saves Menu and scroll down to the bottom, there's always 1 "invisible" save at the bottom which is usually my oldest manual save. Why this glitch happens, I don't know, and why it only freezes when installed, I also have no idea, but I hope that this texture patch might fix how the data is read from the disc. If not, the crashing/freezing will need more work.

Note that saving over the invisible save caused no obvious problems and it just saves over it and it becomes the newest manual save, but then the next oldest one disappears and fills it's space in the "invisible" save slot. Also, my game tends to freeze when travelling in any heavily wooded area like The Rift, Falkreath or The Reach. Also, when travelling into cities like Markarth and Riften, it occasionally freezes. Riften is littered with dead Thieves who got caught by the City Guard at night, and in Markarth I'm about to confront Nepos The Nose in the Forsworn Conspiracy, so maybe that's affecting it.

Like I said, I'm forwarding this to GStaff. Hopefully this issue can be addressed in Patch 1.3.

In 200 hours with it being installed I've only had 4 freezes, so any type of freezing is probably random. Clear the Cache, load an earlier save and hope for the best.

It is an issue and it needs to be fixed. "It's probably random" doesn't really help. Experience says otherwise.

Clearing the Cache was not advisable until Patch 1.2 because it would also clear the textures from the Cache meaning you had to play from disc for 3 hours and then re-install just to get decent textures.

Clearing the Cache is only a temporary aide, the issue is the strain of loading multiple assets and random encounters/corpses etc. This is the reason why only the Forests and Cities tend to crash, the northern ice wastes are always fairly safe framerate-wise.

That could explain a lot of peoples issues, but my 70hr character crashes when talking to any NPC, in any town, any city, any house etc. I have no problems if I just wander about, but as soon as I talk to someone within a few seconds the game completely locks up and requires 360 reset.
Transferring a save file to USB stick and running from that didn't fix it, neither did clearing the cache. I know that its not a problem with the disc or the game install as I created a new character tonight and have had no issues. I'll try again tomorrow when the patch is more widely distributed, but from reading the 1.2 list of fixes I doubt it will fix my problems.

Playing on 250GB 360 slim, by the by.

I find that as soon as u notice it freezing, instead of doing the freak out button mash , just lay the controller down and let it catch up. Work 75% or more of the time with skyrim or any other game. (on 360)

A few times with Skyrim, if it doesn't un-freeze within a few minutes, hitting the Guide can "free it up" as well. That said, hitting the Guide is make or break, because if it doesn't fix the freeze, it'll make it so you have to turn off your console, but I always figure it's worth a try.

On a side note, I did get a crash when playing from disc before the patch arrived, but nothing has happened since the patch.

Signed out of my gf's profile at the main menu last night after she was done playing, and signed into mine. Clicked continue and it froze on the loading screen requiring me to power my system down to fix. I have a brand new MW3 LE console, and no other game has ever frozen on me. This was with the 1.1 patch, so I decided to bite the bullet and DL patch 1.2 after clearing my system cache to see if that cleared the issue up. I do NOT have any issues with the resistance bug post patch either, but I mainly want that freezing crap gone.

Pretty sure it's the patch. I've been playing it since launch day. I've got just under 200hrs in and before the 1.2 patch the game never locked up on me. Since yesterdays update it's happened to me five times, usually right after I fast travel or try to open the wait menu.

One thing to consider: This is a Bethesda game. It's gonna freeze. All their games have issues where it locks your system, and it seems they haven't gotten any better at releasing a stable game over the years.
