XBOX and PS3: do they use Steam also?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 10:02 pm

I was checking the stats page at Steam http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ and FONV is down to ~ 8,000 people playing as logged on to Steam. So I'm wondering if that number included XBOX and PS3, also does it include PC users playing FONV in "offline mode"??

8,000 people, worldwide (?) seems like an awfully low number when potential players are numbered in millions; even the 100,000 playing Counter-Strike seems low to me compared to total game sales

No?

Besides, some people play New Vegas in offline mode (from what I hear.).

Give Valve some time, though. They're planning on using Portal 2 to gain a foothold on the Xbox and possibly the PS3.

Assuming they can negotiate a deal, of course.

The answer to your question, in regards to the PS3, is no.
The Playstation Network is run by Sony Computer Entertainment, so there is no connection to Valve and/or Steam's deployment services.

I do not forsee SCE ever allowing another company such a foothold in to the PSN. About as close as any company will get is through Home ... and, as a longtime Playstation boy, I think that's plenty close enough.

I would imagine the majority of the sales were on the 360, with the PC being second and the PS3 third. However I would not be surprised if PS3 sales were higher than the PC's sales were.

So Steam is just PC players - how about "offline" mode being counted into stats? Anyone know ?

lol, Microsoft will never allow steam to come to xbox. Xbox have their own "microsoft points" to buy games and such and I don't see them creating competition within their own box. Plus, I don't know about most other xboxers but I'm still running with a 20GB harddrive on the xbox. If steam came to xbox and forced you to download the game onto your harddrive (thats how steam works right?) quite a few customers would find this takeing over their limited harddrive space. (also, i know I can hook up my PC space to allow for more memory for my xbox saves, I just choose not to).

I guess the question is really - how offline is "offline" for Steam?? I thought I had it set to offline, but it still logs me in

The Steam stats page lists concurrent numbers, not total uniques.

8,000 players at one time could mean 75,000 to 100,000 uniques in a 24-hour period.

Counter-Strike shows a peak of 70,000 concurrents but when you check on a site like Game-Monitor, it shows the total number of uniques in a 24-hour period as 2.2 million people. And I don't think that's counting the thousands of cyber cafes throughout the world as I'm pretty sure Game-Monitor only tracks public servers.

It's apparently the PS3 version of Portal 2 that will be the first to get Steamworks. Initially it is supposed to support online cross platform play, PS3, PC and Mac.

Foot in the door.
