You Got To Be Kidding Me

This is why we'll never get another decent TES RPG. They keep winning awards from completely ignorant people who wouldn't know what RPG stands for, much less what an RPG is.

This is exactly why I can't take half of the people on this forum seriously.

People wouldn't be happy with Skyrim if it was an extended series of scrolling texts, a visual book if you will.

Hate on the new thing, generalize everything... straight out of the playbook of a 90 year old.

Get off my lawn I say...

Did you read my post? Where am I 'hating' on the game? I quite like it actually. There's nothing special about the story it's painfully generic and all the NPC's are lifeless and completely devoid of character. I am of the opinion a story has to be carried. A good story can get away with average NPC's, a bad one can seem good with NPC's with character and personality. Skyrim fits neither description.

Skyrim has some of the worst voice-overs I have ever heard in any videogame and I've played a lot of them. Ridiculous NPC's carrying a bland story does not for me equate to masterful storytelling but like I said it's not up against much these days.

Skyrim has a story? The only interesting lore I found ingame were books I stumbled upon whilst adventuring that were already in Oblivion and/or Morrowind :[

On a more serious note, I suppose Thieves' Guild was pretty alright. Main quest had a few good moments too (Paarthunax :]) but winning a story award for it just further proves how misguided the gaming industry as a whole has become.

There are no words to describe how strongly I disagree with this. Especially the voice acting criticism.

Maybe it won because Bethesda know what they are doing now-a-days? Skyrim's dragons are by far the best ones I've ever seen in a game.

Skyrim didn't win story for me because of the main quest-line, it's unpolished animation, terrible voice actor for General Tulius, and wonky bugs.

To me, Elder Scrolls is a huge world and it's the lore that makes the story. The characters with unique names, habits, their effect on you, etc. The books you read and the notes you find about a character you want to know more about. The journals left behind enemies or random dead NPC's that you might not be fond of at first, but then upon reading them and seeing the environment they've been living in you might actually feel sorry for or like the person. All of this comes together and I think the team knows this is the flesh of making the world feel alive and give it character.

Honestly, I find the story in a lot of games to be generic, cliche and not interesting, but only held up by hight production values. If TES games had killer animation in that regard, it would be super nice, but again that's not what makes the game as a whole. TES lore is the best.

Well, sir, I don't know what to tell you. I'd be curious to know what movies you find good if Braveheart isn't among them.

Well it would be pointless to name something that isn't even in the same genre, so I would suggest Troy.

...or you could compare it to Apollo 13, that did not win the academy award that year since Braveheart apparently was better??? :nope:

Edit: Also, I'm not in the least surprised that the same people attacking Skyrim's story are "above" films like Braveheart.

I haven't attacked Skyrim's story, it's much better than Braveheart...

Are you counting the Companions as a guild? Because the Companions quests were pretty damn good.

When referencing story, I'd assume they mean the Main Quest for the award.

Could be wrong about that, but everything outside of the Main Quest is just add-on content in my opinion.

Though it does account for more in-game time than the Main Quest does.

For all of the time sinking in previous titles, 'depth', it can be nice to see that it doesn't have to necessarily take 100 hours to finish a guild for once. Truth be told here, you can make any time in a guild as long as you want through repetitive and endless Radiant Quests.

Players asked for choice, they got it, and now they want boundaries back. Some people...

The guilds that I played were good stories, they were just short.

By far the best guild storyline. The College of Winterhold quests were well well written too, but very short.

The Wicther series,Hell the Witcher 2's prologue is more interesting than any of the content in Skyrim not to mention it actually has a story.

skyrim with witcher 2 armor mods

> every other RPG out there.

Come At Me Broski.

It's ironic that you're calling them ignorant. You know, I've played all of TES games, and I still think Skyrim is the best. Am I ignorant because I like modern RPGs better than "Classic" RPGs? Oh yeah, your opinion is factual because you like the originals better. :shakehead:

I agree, more time spent on a story does not make it better. There's no gain in having a main quest that goes on for 100 hours, if 75 of them are just repeating the same thing (like walking...). A shorter and more intense experience can be much more rewarding.

So true, which is why the award is about the story and not the time invested in the experience I'd think. Though this is coming from an avid Metal Gear fan who has spent countless days of time watching cutscenes and backstory, and reading codec reports and such. This is a pretty good anology as well, as the excessive narrative in MGS is considered to be a large part of its shortcomings. Even if I did rather enjoy it.

There are not many stories in Skyrim that I didn't find really interesting, and could not wait to find out the outcome.

I'll certainly agree that most of the stories, narratives if you will, were pretty short and left me feeling like I drank a... God forbid.... light beer.
