Being Forced to be Evil

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 2:43 pm

In my game, my quest log says "Join the Imperial Legion". Two entries further down it says "Join the Stormcloaks". You can't possibly do both.

Your quest log isn't law, it doesn't reflect what your character has decided to do, only what he/she can do. Treat it like a series of suggestions - your character's actions is what defines them, not what's in his or her quest log.

True.

But if I walked away from this one particular quest that dude would be in that cage FOREVER.

That's actually his choice. No one told him to go there. You cannot be held responsible for his own actions.

In the end he would win actually, because he bested that daedra lord previously.

There are some choices there, but what I want to know, that where you are clearly aware that this is one of the ... less than savoury daedric princes.. why'd you'd work for them in the first place if you aren't happy committing unsavoury deeds? Honest question, no criticism.

I wholly support that some more multi-threaded quests would be great, but there are some, and many come under whether you would have accepted the task in the first place.

Vaermina's gave you a very black and white choice too.

For the 5th time...

I wasn't aware this was going to be a Daedra Lord quest where you do a task for one.

>Dude runs up to me on street and asks for help clearing out a house of Daedra worshipers.

It was not clear that it was going to turn around and I'd be forced to help a Daedra or leave a half-finished quest sitting in my log.

The point is.. once you realise who it is you are "working" for, you have the choice to walk away. I do agree with you, I said that I think more multi-threaded quests would be great, but the fact remains you can let him out and leave.. yes, the quest is not completed.. and I would wear it as a badge of honour that you resisted the influence of a daedric prince.. and that quest is a constant reminder.. and temptation...

Its all in how you look at it.

Well, if memory serves, molag bals commands you to kill the dude you went in with before you get to work with him... So if you just randomly strike down an innocent I'm pretty sure you're evil. Just sayin'.

You know, it is possible to respond without being offensive. You've been given some different outlooks and thoughts on the matter. You're just being rude now, its unnecessary.

Well, with the Vaermina (spelled right?) you get the choice of killing your companion and getting the Skull of Corruption or let him do his thing, and destroy the Skull of Corruption. no question what's evil there, right? That poor daedric artifact must be saved! :D

But the quest isn't optional. It is thrown in your face.

Yes, I could just walk away and leave the guy in the cage for an eternity, along with an unfinished quest in my log, but my OCD would not allow for that, DUH.

Hang on, doesn't the quest start with you being asked to follow a guy in and check out an evil house? And then you're told to kill him?

You would have had plenty of opportunities to step out.

You are asked by law enforcement to help clear out a house of Daedra worshipers. Sounded like a good deed.

The Daedra God then asks both of you to kill each other. I do nothing - he tries to kill me, I defend myself. Nothing wrong there.

But then the same quest wants you to lead a guy there to be slain. I tell the guy what is up, that it is a trap from the Daedra God, but he is cocky and goes anyways. He gets trapped. God asks me to kill him. No option to say no. I try to find a way to free him from the cage, but there is no way.

At this point I have 2 choices. Either walk away, leave him in the cage forever and let the quest be half-finished or kill him.

I don't like leaving half-finished quests in my log forever. It's annoying.

Yes, as I have done for a few pages now.

Or are you like the rest and simply do not read a thread but insist on commenting on it and leveling accusations against the OP?

Get over yourself. If someone is going to post the same thing 5 times in a row without actually reading the thread or my response (that I've typed up in one form or another like 6 times now) may come off a bit rude.

Deal with it. It's an internet forum. I remain respectful to those until they no longer deserve it. If that isn't up to your internet forum standards then simply ignore my thread and don't waste your time replying to anything I say.

Actually, you're wrong in saying that Molag Bal doesn't command the player to kill the priest. I clearly remember the immersive moment entering that house and exploring it until the priest ran scared back to the entrance. Molag Bal's exact words were "Weak. He's weak... You're strong. Crush him!" I walked back to entrance after looting the place, he told me we have to get out and find help. I entered stealth and assassinated him.

He never attacked me.

Except it wasn't that simple. Spoiler of this random quest ahead.

>Walking down street.
>Dude turns to me, cut scene.
>Asks for help clearing out a scary house of Daedra worshipers.
>Daedra God makes dude crazy - dude tries to kill me.
>I kill dude in self-defense.
>Daedra says come down stairs to get my prize.
>Ooo a prize? okay!.jpg Nothing evil about getting a prize, right?
>Get trapped in cage - given Quest to kill a dude - no option to defy/say no.
>Derp?

So a Daedra God made a dude crazy enough to try to kill you and when 2 minutes later the same Daedra God offered you a prize in his evil voice you was like "sure, gimme that prize!"... I'd hate to break your bubbles but if you roleplay a good character then you should have simply walked out of that house without checking out what the prize was. YOU chose to accept an evil prize, YOU decided to become evil, noone forced that choice on you.

Every Daedra quest I encountered so far gave me a choice to either say no or leave the area without taking part in the Daedra's business.

This is the perfect "Ignore what you don;t want to do" example. You can't do both, but both are listed in your quest log. If this isn't a problem, then why the heck would ignoring any other quest that doesn't fit with your character be an issue?

It's a matter of perspective. That's what I like about skyrim's questlog. It just says: now do this. What I interpret while doing that action is up to me. I did that whole quest without being evil whatsoever. First I accept a request to kill daedra worshipers, then I kill a man in self defence, then I lure a daedra worshipper to the shrine and kill him. I get rewarded with a evil mace, which I promptly drop off a high waterfall, with a good net karma. You do realise the guy in the cage is evil as well right? Killing him isn't a bad thing. But I kind of see where you are coming from, such as in oblivion, where I'd accidentally kill one guy and then id have this annoying invitation to join an assassins cult. But, i'd just put up with it, as will you. Or start a new game. Or mod it out. Whatever.

It would be nice to have the option to at least hide some quests. Many of the Oblivion Daedric quests allowed you to intentionally fail them too.

I really wish there was a way to tell them to [censored] off or remove the quest from my journal, for reasons unknown to me it annoys me a lot to have random quests in there I know I'm never going to do.

This was sort of my experience as well. Molag Bal told me to crush him. I look over at the guy for a few seconds and he does absolutely nothing. Since I always like daedra quests I obviously smacked his head in a few seconds later.. So to me it appeared I had the choice of just running out of this building without killing him.

Just becouse you were given a quest and told to do something doesn't mean you have to...

Lets do an experiment.. Go walk off a cliff. Will you? By your logic you just HAVE to, right? :)

I can see the original poster's point of view. Many of the replies have specified choices, and there is that but I think it's more and because of this I really like it.

Without spoilers, I know which quest he is talking about, basically you accept a quest from an innocent and it leads to trickery and committing an evil act by the daedra.

Now some will say you can simply decline the quest. Which is possible but often means you know about the quest beforehand and is a bit of a cheat.

But I think the game is striving for more than that. Skyrim is full of events, quests and choices in which no matter what you do, someone innocent is going to get hurt. For this particular quest you realize that this particular daedra is pretty evil and he used trickery to do his dirty work. You don't mean to be evil, you don't want to do it, but it happens. Your hand was forced and you do something that makes you feel sick inside. To me that's immersion and a sign of a good story. You may not like that but that's what the Elder Scrolls is all about. I personally like it and it adds to the story.

I was looking at past RPGs that people love and adore and almost all without exception have moments like this where your character does thing he's not proud of. It virtually impossible in these games as in real life to be purely "good". But then what's the fun in that? The point is, you can still be good in Skyrim but there will definitely be skeletons in your closet when it's all done.

***spoilers***

This. So much this. And this isn't the only example. At some npcs you can actually say 'NO', but they just give you some lip instead and quest gets entered into your quest log anyway. Like OP I'm also slightly OCD about this matter and I just can't leave a quest unattended. I'm not saying I didn't mildly enjoy clubbing that guy to death :whistling: , but given the choice, I'd rather have a good/evil approach, in this case maybe smashing the shrine that that would then spawn one of Morag Bal's followers that I'd have to defeat. Same was in Eora's (?) questline, I had no idea what was going on so I let her live, next thing I know I'm feasting on human flesh.

Maybe I just got spoiled by Bioware.
