FPS "Dropdown"?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 6:33 pm

I have a:
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 Graphic Card
- Intel i5 2500K 3.30GHz Processor
- 8GB RAM

I was playing the game fine, installed some graphic mods, some weapon mods etc... everything was running fine and smooth, since 5minutes ago.
Outside, not in Interiors, outside such as in Riverwood or in the entrance of Embershard Mine e.g, my FPS kinda dropped alot, the game got laggy when i'm Outside, it is like i'm running the game in Slow-Mo.. What is happening ? What should i do ? Is there something to make my performance get better ?

Note: I don't think it is the Mods problem, because it was running fine since i installed them (2 days ago), just now, 5 minutes ago, it started...

The "texture" mods i'm using are:
- RWT Realistic Water Texture
- Skyrim Sunglare v3
- Skyrim 2k (All the packs - Dungeons, Landscape, Towns, Misc -)

And i guess it is all of them..

Oh, i'm also using Enchanted Distant Terrain and Lush Trees.

But all was working fine, really smooth.. Any ideas ?

My guess is enchanted distant terrain and Lush Trees since it will tax you harder in certain areas of the Outside world.
Also isn't your i5 2500k running at 3.7 with turbo? Might want to try OC'ing it to 4.0 which is pretty easy.

Well, almost every 10-20 minutes in game I have to do alt-tab to improve my FPS. Cause after visiting number of different places the framerate drops below comfortable level. Alt-tab fix that for me.
Btw that kind of things began for me after downloading HD texture pack. And I don't think that my 560ti and 4,5GHz 2500k should have any problems with that.

If you're running Beth's HD Pack I seriously suggest turning it off via the Launcher under Data Files, unless you have the 1.5GB+ card. If you really want to use HD Pack use the optimized version from the SkyrimNexus the optimized version even works fine on a 512MB GPU.

Skyrim HD shouldn't be to demanding however it doesn't hurt to run with it uninstalled, just rename your texture folder to test.

Would you be so kind and link here that "optimized" HD pack? :)

I've already installed Beth's HD pack fix, but it only helped with purple and red pieces of wood. Framerate still drops every 10-20 minutes. And I don't want to play without HD.

- You can test your VRAM-RAM usage and spikes with this tool:

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=2006

- I recommend too install and optimize your textures (combining bethesda default textures, DLC HD res textures and optimize HD DLC mod in 2 uncompressed .bsa) with this guide:

http://stepupdates.blogspot.com/2012/02/using-ddsopt.html

- Lush trees causes too stutter and you must uninstall this and instead enhanced distant terrain install HQLODS by Ethathron:

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4834

- re-config your Skyrimlauncher and .ini options.

- Check your Ugrids option in Skyrim.ini (value 7 is recommended for quality/performance, value 5 is default and no performance loss)

- Defrag your hard drive or, optional and expensive, buy an SSD hard drive (if you don't have one)

- Install NVIDIA driver 295.73 (45% performance improvement in Skyrim tested with GTX560Ti) and config in NVIDIA Control Panel AA options, etc. I recommend 4x-8x Multisampling for performance (good quality too) or 2x-4x Supersampling for best quality (test yourself). 16xAF always with your rig.

- Simple Borderless Windows fix 64Htz bug (only fix micro stutter not bad stutters, test yourself too):

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4

- Install Skyboost r5 for 1.4.21 or waiting for new version for 1.4.27:

http://alexander.sannybuilder.com/?category=other-bethgames&altname=skyrim_boost - MUST HAVE

If these steps don't work, install Skyrim HD 2k mod LITE version instead FULL version.

No Problem

Your GTX560Ti is a problem with HD texture pack (unoptimized) and HD texture mods because have only 1Gb VRAM. I had problems (bad stutters loading textures in outdoor, in Riverwood for example) with my HD5850 with 1Gb VRAM too before optimize my textures with this guide. After you do all steps check again your memory usage with Elys Meminfo, I need around 1200mb usage for no stutter gameplay with my rig(I have Q9300 CPU, HD5850, 4gb RAM DDR3 and normal HDD not SSD)

You will need time for this installation method but you will get clean and optimize installation with free stutter/good fps and minimal quality loss xD

Mine does this too.. I exited the game and entered again and it worked, started to work Smooth again.. but it is very strange to have the necessity to do that, isnt it ?

Well, after some driver, mods and ini tuning I've got pretty awesome picture, but that didn't stop FPS dropdown :( Sounds like I need to upgrade my 560ti.. Dunno if another one in SLI would be better then selling current one and buying 570 or 580.

Hi,

I choose to post my troubleshooting here, i've the same config' and a FPS issuses too.

So, my game work on the 1.4.21 version, Ugrids tweak ( 7 ), whithout mods or ENB and i use SMAA.

In forest and only here ( i think, i hope... ), not in a heavy scene necessary, randomly, my fps fall from 60 ( V-sync ) to 40-45 FPS...

My Vram is not full, and my temperatures is normaly. ( for the CPU and GPU )

I try many things, OC, Skyboost R5 test 3 with/whithout gpu opti', old Nvidia drivers, ...

So, if someone can help me... Thanks !

Sorry for my english...

Good game !

Or you can buy new ATI cards, HD7950 is better card tan 570 or 580 (only 590 is better). You can too set your itexmipmapskip option in ini config from 0 to 1 but this option down quality textures :(

Or uninstall big texture mods (only install a few Little texture mods from your choice) and only use HD DLC texture pack optimized (hybrid + normal maps is recommended option).

I also have same problem. I had another thread, but I write in here.

Just after install beths. HD texture pack, my game get stuttering when entering or exiting. especially when entering towns or exiting from interiors to exteriors. now, I did all sorts of tweekings, like I was adviced on my thread with no real benefits (and I don`t want to play without HD) so I did some more research and incidently I get on some forum this ideea:

right click tesV.exe, properties, compatibility, check disable desktop composition. this is to disable aero on win7 and thus freeing around 100 mb on vram. interestingly, this helped very much, as after this my stuttering is just imperceptible (though still there)

also it helps to disable autosave on traveling.

weird is that gpu-z tells that vram usage is not higher than 1019 mb (before tweeking tesV.exe) and 1008 mb (after tesV.exe tweek) and this should mean vram is not excideed, isn`t it?

also, Bethesda sais HD texture pack require 1 gb vram, they don`t mention 1.25 gb or more...

I found many many people with exact config as mine (E8400, 560 ti 1gb, 4 gb ram) with no problem whatsoever, so I still wonder why is this stilol a problem for some of us?

To me it sounds like this game has some kind of memory leak and the Alt, Tab trick flushes some of your VRAM. All the HD texture pack does is push you to the limit of 1GB of VRAM and it might be made worse by a memory leak. If people with larger VRAM than 1GB hit their limit, say your 570 has 1280MB VRAM then there is something wrong.

If the game does indeed use a lot more VRAM than 1GB, well that just doesn't make sense because as the hardware goes to RAM for an extra 200Mb+ of memory it would stutter more than it does.

Try install HD DLC Bethesda texture pack but optimized version (Hybrid + normal map down VRAM usage with minimal quality loss)

So if you're not hitting your VRAM limit then there is something else at fault and nothing to do with textures. People are too eager to blame the HD texture pack.

I'd like to buy ATI product, but everytime I see Catalyst Control Panel my mind gets blown up :) I think that waiting for geforce 6** would be better choise. Prices on 5** family will go down obviously.
Btw I don't use any other graphics mod besides Beth's HD optimized. It's so dissapointing to know that 1gb vram is not enough.

Render engine need optimizations by bethesda. Alexander Blade (Skyboost creator) is working on optimize hashtables for achieve less stutter but this need time xD

Directx11 support in future patches will be great also for this but we need confirmation by bethesda.

Hi,

I found a fix for my problem, if i turn off all anistropic filtering i haven't any FPS fall.

FPS hit :

8 x Anistropic filtering from Nvidia : around 10 FPS

16 x From Nvidia : around 20 FPS

and 16 x from game launcher : around 7 FPS

And only in forest, and not everywhere in forest.

It's very strange for a vanilla game, no ?

Config :

GTX 570

I5 2500k 3.0 GHz

8 Go DDR3 1600 MHz

What do you think ?

I can`t say I solved my stuttering problem after new cell loading, but definetly have much better performance:

first I did a defragment on my disk. second I set the virtual memory to double the ram. the rest are as nvidia recomends for 560 ti except shadows are only on high and not ultra.

now I only get a minimum of 26 frames after new cell loading when making a quick spin, otherwise it`s all above 30 (as I limited my fps to 31)

Wow - see, this doesn't work for me.
I want to see 60 fps average, with minimums 40 fps +
