Huge save file (60mb) causing stuttering

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:27 pm

No. Let me repeat: No one is having trouble with quick or auto save. No one. Nobody. It's not an issue. Quit repeating bad advice.

Don't be a troll, please. Google "trouble with quick or auto save in Skyrim" and you will find many people with problems, most with CTD in W7. And quit repeating that my advices (there are 8 in total, If you have read it) are bad.
Like I said, It WORKS FOR ME in FO3, MO, OB and now in Skyrim. So, If you don't have troubles with corrupt saves, good for you. Now go bother someone else.

Dude. Who's trolling here? Me, the guy who told you to stop repeating falsehoods or you who are trying to scare people with second hand anecdotes? I put you in your place for spreading false information. I'm sorry you got your toes stepped on but that's how it goes. I surf these forums daily and I've never seen the problem you claim exists. I don't care if you've had autosave disabled since Morrowind or since Pong. That has nothing to do with Skyrim. And your evidence is that you've never had an issue with a feature because you've never used it? Genius!

You call me a liar, and you said you are not trolling me? Kid, respect me, please. Like I said, GOOGLE IT, not all the Skyrim players report in this forum, you know that?

Not since pong, since X-Com (1994).

Are you familiar with this?

1. Prevention is better than remedying.
2. Golden rule of gaming: Save often, save well.

I don't have time (or age) to be bother with your trolling. To busy trying to help someone with problems playing skyrim, like in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1357309-cursor-visible-in-game/ --> Make yourself useful, If you want, and help me to help that guy.

I don't know if you are being serious. If not Sorry for misunderstanding your joke. If Ims919 says there is a blue guy in his kitchen, you can use your years of experien and thousands of years of others experience to assume is laying. If Ims919 says that a feature from game with four months on the market can cause throubles, you simply can't be sure of that information not being true. Especially since previous games have that same problem.

I don't know why you had suddenly that reaction. I remember seing your avatar in other threads and I would consider you a reasonable guy.

Now about autosave issue. Save corruption is not like bytes melting or any other archane thing. There is simply your save having problematic parameters. There are many issues causing an instant and irrevocable CTD, like a destroyed havok physicked object being touched. If someone enters a cell whith one of those problems and then the game is saved, that save will CTD each time you load it.

Autosave is a nice backup feature.....that said if you don't make intelligently timed hard saves often well you will be an unhappy camper at some point I am willing to bet. Some people like to use both others prefer to hard save but the fact that autosaves will somehow cause your game to destroy itself or lead to a 60MB save file is just wrong.

I have the greatest respect for Amegpo as he makes the only mod that I use. I have a level 40 with a 8.2 MB save file most of the world explored and play like a reckless jerkoff. I personally don't use auto save, have never read of any post anywhere in which autosave was PROVEN to be the cause of a corrupted game ending save. That said I have had a few CTD's before patch 1.3 and none since.....there are so many factors that could lead to a CTD. Let's stick to the OP's issue, not fight and try and figure out how the hell someone has a 60 MB save file because that is far more interesting than any type of autosave discussion. AMEGPO U R HOT AND YOUR BROKEN ENGLISH MAKES YOU HOTTER <3

Oh and if you feel like theorycrafting hit my thread and help me understand this whole UGRID thing down to the last tiny detail: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1357508-ugrids-the-proper-settings/

It's possible that 'overworked' rigs could have more problems with Autosave...
There are many factors.
If CPU/memory are worked heavily (ie. game has been up for ~6 hours or whatever) different rigs respond in different ways.
There might be a LOT of swapping going on, both main memory and PCI-E.
Rigs with less powerful platforms, and/or marginal storage systems (ie. only one harddisk) are going to suffer more and these components working very hard.
My rig uses 3 harddisks when playing. All are big fast WD Caviar Black.
One for Windows; one for Steam; and one for my swapfile (main memory page file).
My rig can swap huge data in & out of memory in the background without impacting the gameplay experience at all... (you can't tell it's happening).
The typical rig, if you're leaving your home in Whiterun, tries to autosave - but it's also trying to render Whiterun and all its NPCs and get all the scripts rolling.
Under the most adverse conditions it's possible that the autosave mechanism can't cope and will glitch.
This occurs when there is a lot of vidcard texture swapping happening via PCI-E, plus main memory swapping, plus trying to load the new scene, plus trying to write a 12MB game save file (all using the same harddisk).
I consider it a performance issue.
If your rig can't cope there are two ways you can go, like any other performance issue.
-beef up your rig
-turn off autosaves
In 950 hours + I've never had an autosave issue.
Nor in FO:NV, FO3, ES-IV, ES-III either...
But often I've left my house and forgot something, and turning around went right back in again.
This is torture-test for the game, and writing two autosave files one on top of the other in quick succession does seem pretty... unneccessary.
It can be a big unneccessary stress for everyone's rigs!
So go ahead and disable it - better safe than sorry - and enjoy a much cooler/calmer gameplay experience (bonus).

I prey the guy is not an American, because I am American and it is embarrassing to see people come onto forums and use Bozo behavior. Our problem here is that we do not have to use other languages so the concept can be foreign to many less than deep thinkers. I have seen many occasions where someone may make fun of the way someone writes English but these people forget that the person they are making fun of may have English as thier 3rd or 4th language. I always like to use the phrase "He can converse and communicate in 3 languages, how many can you?"

Many people forget that the internet opens access to people from all over the world, and that is what makes the internet great. It becomes easy to think that you may be conversing with someone next door, but in fact that person may be from half way around the world. Because of this, to ever make a statement about the way someone else may be speaking or writing, is just plain dumb.

Mods, for all our sakes, please don't let this degenerate into a trollfest. This is a real problem that's WRECKING Skyrim, at least for those who are plagued by it.

And speaking of these unfortunate souls, I too have been hit by the dreaded Wandering Bloat. I am level 39, up til now my savegames were in the 7MB range. After "A Blade in the Dark" (or thereabouts), the size shot up to 14MB+, and then gleefully marched on to 65MB+ per save. Below is my modlist.

Try taking out Auto Unequip Arrows and see if your savegame size reduces.

Not so simple, I fear. I did take it Auto Unequip Arrows as you suggested, but the bloat continues unabated. I picked up 3MB per save on average, and am now at 32MB total as of last save. I really don't want this to be the end of my Skyrim experience... but this is getting to be untenable.

Also, I think I just set a bloat record: 138MB! Top THAT, baby!

Ehh, gamesas, gamesas. The day we can play your games without tearing our hair out and losing sleep is the day we all die and go to heaven.

This is just freakin' sad.

I even tried starting the game with ALL of my mods disabled, and making a new save. Instagain of about 4MB (I literally didn't move my character an inch, just loaded and resaved).

IMO, For the bloat go away, perhaps is better to wait 30 days in-game. At least, you give the game a chance to respawn correctly.
You have a lot of mods, some are doing the same thing (although in a different way): Mart's Savegame DeBloatifier and Possessive Corpses, for example. You just need one of them (Or even better, you can pick up the last version of USKP and remove both). You also don't need HighRes Texture Pack Fix if you don't have the DLC HighRes Texture Pack from Bethesda in your game.

I compared your list of mods with th OP list, I don't see any common mods that may cause that kind of bloat (+60 Mb).

I appreciate the advice, but I just don't want to wait 30 days (it'll probably take me 30 days IRL to make the game wait that long, considering the autosave takes forever now, LOL).

Debloatifier and Possessive Corpses overlap in SOME functionality, but not in all. Possessive corpses prevents the corpses from dissipating into piles of dust, that's why I'm running it.

There's got to be something that's tripping me up all of a sudden. I wish there was a meaningful way to anolyze savegames and see where the duck all the new stuff is coming from.

It is some mod, or some group of mods that are causing that kind of bloat. It is not the game itself. Even a highest level player that has explored most of the world with have under or around 20 megs. I am level 79 and have covered probably 80% and I an at 14 -15 megs per hard save. I do have a number of mods but nothing like the mod list you guys have.

If you search back through your saves and see a specific spike at some point that may help you pin point a date and then you can look at the dates that you added mods, to see if you can narrow the list down. Some mod you have is not cleaning up nicely and polluting your game world with leftover, and possible invisible, garbage.

Well I found a way to wait 30 days without going batcrap insane, there's a mod that replaces the sleep menu and lets you sleep for 30 days at a time.

After a 30 days wait in an interior cell, the save size went down to 30MB. i resaved a few times, at a first gander it seems that the save size stabilized. But I refuse to use this as a solution (even though game time is largely meaningless; plus, there's no guarantee that the bloat won't happen again).

The "spike" happened a couple days ago, I haven't added a mod in a while. I added the debloatifier when the spike became apparent, not that it helped at all. Most of my mods are tweaks, very few use scripts and they don't spawn anything, they mostly move stuff around. To gain size that quickly, I would have to have a rogue script of some kind that constantly spawns crap every second... I don't think I have any mod that does that...

Plus, I tried loading with NO MODS AT ALL and resaving. No luck there either.

I nailed it! Several scripts were at fault, one of them mine. Bizarre.

EDIT: OK, that was not terribly informative and ass-like in general. I myself hate when people post responses like this.

What cured MY issue:

- I unchecked 2 separate mods and deleted their corresponding scripts from the Scripts folder.
- Just unchecking the mods did not work.
- Both mods worked fine until today.
- After I removed the offending mods' scripts, I was able to load my most bloated (140MB) save, and re-save it immediately, in an exterior cell; the size went back down to under 10MB.

I'm trying to get in touch with one of the mods' author, so I'm not going to name the mod... maybe the issue is entirely on my end and he's not at fault at all...

My mod consisted of a quest script that monitored the player's skill levels and awarded certain mastery perks automatically. I posted a separate thread about it here if you want to see the script:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1358788-script-causes-savegame-bloat/

If this were to happen to me again, the first thing I would do would be empty the Scripts folder and then gradually add the scripts back in to see if this helps.

Thar she blows. This was altogether miserable.

@lms919: Trusting your game only with autosaves and quicksaves is silly, yes, but there's nothing wrong with having autosaves enabled and do quicksaves between hard saves (that's how I play - mostly I do hard saves when quests are completed successfully).

Even if you don't make hard saves, there's nothing wrong with playing based on autosaves and quicksaves, you just gamble on having a game-breaking bug/glitch that compromises your game and you can't can't go back, because you don't have a "clean" save to go back to.

A person that plays games (RPGs and more importantly, TES games that are complex games) with only autosaves and quicksaves must be a total gaming newbie, must have started to play yesterday.

Lol, Moby-dike, The Beatles and Victor Hugo... :nerd: (nevermind....)

Glad for you having found the solution for your problem, maybe the OP can read your post and try to do the same to resolve their bloat savegame.

@ Raen Yrtham: I agree with almost everything you said, especially the last sentence. Cheers :foodndrink:
