I know this is a pretty nooby question, but...

I'm new to the GECK and I dropped a container into the wasteland. Now it's floating in the air and I'm trying to figure out how you lower it. How do you?

I'm assuming you can move it left and right, yes?

If so, just hold 'z'. Moving the mouse, then, will move the container up and down along the 'z' axis.

No problem! ^_^

We all gotta start somewhere. For some of us, it's learning how to position things three-dimensionally. For others... it's trying to figure out how to operate a camera which keeps rotating you around in circles without any kind of a compass to help keep track of which direction is which.

Another way is simply press F when the container/object is selected and it will automatically drop to the ground.

Easier to tap the "F" key, which will cause it to fall to the next mesh that it encounters. I usually put the item on the desk, hit [F], then raise it a click or two to make sure it has a teeny tiny gap between the desk and the object.

Most of the time I work from an object palette, and ctrl-alt-click to place the object. If there are any fog effects, lights, or other areas, I always zoom in as far as I can (hold down [V] and move the mouse up/down) before doing the ctrl-alt-click. Otherwise when you put the object in, it likes to perch on top of whatever fog / light / activation box is in the view in front of the camera.

Alright, I got another question.

I"m trying to add an inventory image to a weapon but I can't find the game's .DDS files. Where are they located? I've been Googling and searching the GECK wiki but still can't find anything about this. Thanks in advance.

All of the games models and textures are compressed in .bsa files. I'm not sure if the FO3 .bsa extractor will work with New Vegas's .bsa's, but it's worth a shot. You can get it here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/articles/article.php?id=19

When it actually works again, you can use World->Run Havok Sim and the object will not only fall to the nearest mesh, it'll settle as well. Handy for placing corpses in your Gigascorpion nest.

Hopefully they get that working again soon.

In the past when I've needed to use a .dds file in this way, I've done it by either, having my item actually be a copy of another item which has the correct path for the .dds file and, mine's edited to be 'my' item all except for that path to the .dds file. Or, I used FO3edit to edit the thing since it lets you actually edit the path instead of be able to click on files themselves.
