Time travel in a mod.

Post » Thu Feb 10, 2011 5:45 am

I am currently formulating a quest mod, but the story involves time travel. Would you guys like this, or would it just not fit into Fallout at all? I want to do it, but I also have this feeling you guys might just be like, "Time travel in Fallout? NO!". If it was done really well would you guys be ok with it? Or just think its out of place and bad? Thanks for any input.

Time travel in the West/SW region might be interesting...could 'happen' upon our missing 'tribal' back in his days wandering with Marcus...or visit Harold before the tree ate him...any number of weird things could happen...and best of all, you could tag any of them to the Wild Wasteland perk if you wanted.

Time travel is fine, as many things are in the Fallout Universe, and hopefully no purists with a giant bloody stick up their collective rear will try and force everyone to try and change their views.

The thing is, all that matters in Fallout is that things seem thematically fitting. That's it. Beyond that, you can do whatever and it'll feel like a Fallout game, really. How do you make it thematically fitting? Well, possibly the most defining aspects of Fallout is that it's a gigantic B-Movie, and it's set after a nuclear war.

So, make the tech a little cheesy, give it tesla pylons and electrostatic orb thingies, perhaps--just for the sheer humour value of it--attach these things to a nuclear powered car and do a Back to the Future riff, because that would be funny, and Fallout was never afraid of being funny.

So I'm fine with it. I'm fine with it because time travel is as much a B-movie thing as anything and everythinge else in Fallout. So I say run with it, and just have fun with yourself, do it however you like, and even if you don't like my opinion, go your own way. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Your mod. Your rules.

I'm of a mind, its your mod, do whatever you want with it. It's possible to make almost anything fit into these games in one degree to another, its mostly what you think is fun though imo.

As long is it doesn't break causality I'm fine with it.

Perhaps send us back in time to mess with a computer, that when messed with again will break a waterchip

Absolutely. As long as we can have a beer and a game of darts with Gene Hunt.

We have had virtual reality and aliens. A little time travel would not hurt. You could always say it was a simulation.

I'm not outright against time travel... I'm just more curious what exactly it is that you intend to -do- with time travel.

There are plenty of possibilities... and I'm all for seeing new and interesting things... but you have to bear in mind that unless you use a DeLorean, you run the risk of your use of time travel being considered trite... or cliche. Time Travel has been done over, and over, and over... and many different ways. As long as you keep making it interesting and unique, plus through in a little something special to make it your own... then I think you'll find that people are just as willing to accept time travel as they are to accept hideously mutated giant man-eating geckos.

Adorable hideously mutated giant man-eating geckos.

Mmm... gecko...

-Cheers!

For all it matters Gunmaster make the mod, who cares what other people think let your work speak for itself and you will do great

Don't get me wrong I love the community here, that said, for every person that will have a good opinion you'll get another with a bad opinion.

just my lousy 0.02 cap opinion

Well, some people like their mod to have belivability in terms of 'it's PLAUSIBLE' in the Fallout world.

Anyway, I think if you did an HG Wells/Back to the Future esque time travel mod. IE, travel back in time to that exact spot but....25 minutes/days/years etc ago. The background story could possibly be on a terminal, indicating it was a top secret Pre-War Enclave (Remember the Enclave existed as a shadow government before the war) that they wanted to try and develop a way to travel into the past, and the project never saw completion, but it's stuck to only one date or something restrictive. All in all, I think anything is plausible when the 'SCIENCE!' dream that Fallout presents is applied rationaly.

Well, wow. It appears, overwelmingly to say the least, that you guys are more than alright with the idea of time travel making an appearance. I, of course, plan on making it easily 'believable' as well as it fitting into the Fallout Canon as well as I possibly can. I shall continue with the writing and eventually start the making. You guys can expect to hear more about this in several months. (Yes, it takes a while :P) To whoever voted no; I would love to hear why you voted that, your opinion is important dispite it being against that of most, and perhaps it could help me avoid doing something that would 'mess it up' for you. Thank you everyone for the feedback!! It was very helpful in making my decision.

That was actually a special random encounter in Fallout 2. You went into the "Guardian of Forever", a time portal from the old original series of Star Trek, and it took you back to Vault 13 before the water chip broke.

That was kind of the joke, as sort of a precursor to that encounter.

Personally I wouldn't use the mod. Not that it wouldn't be well done or anything, but I just prefer my mods to run alongside the Fallout universe instead of adding new laws for the universe, I guess.

If there were subtle time travel in a future game that was done well, I'd probably be fine with it, but not with a mod for me.

I have nothing against time travel. Wait, nevermind that, I love time travel.

So if it's done in a somewhat believable way, and it leads to something interesting (not a pop up 'it is now two days later than before, lol.' when you enter the machine) then I say go ahead!
