How well did the DLCs sell?

Post » Thu Feb 17, 2011 4:30 pm

I am curious if they released sales numbers or at least estimated sales for the DLCs? I am curious how many copies each of them sold? And how HH and DM compare in terms of sales?
-No particular reason that I want to know, I'm just curious.

That information is confidential and released on a need-to-know basis. Right now, you don't need to know.

I know that it was a success for the game makers (Obsidian, gamesas) and a big fat zero for resellers (GameStop, mostly)

Which is really the whole point of DLC in the first place.

FO3 DLC was released on retail Discs, not sure if they will ever do that for NV. But DLC is used to make fast money mostly, its fast and cheap to make and it sells fast and requires no production costs. That is why so many developers use DLC for extra income now (as oppose to expansion packs like before which cost more money but had much more content and probably were a lot longer to make). But yea I agree it is unfair for resellers, unless you count Sony and Microsoft because they get a percentage of the profit from downloads (Steam may as well, not exactly sure how that would work).

It didn't make it on the top 25 most downloaded add ons on Xbox Live... Or the top rated... Neither did Dead Money.

On Steam it is the number 6 RPG top seller list (this is all RPG products including full games), it is a few spots ahead of New Vegas.

Why do you care if resellers make money? They are just evil capitalist pigs.

It would make sense for it to be more popular on the PC. Hell, if I had a decent gaming machine I would play PC instead of xbox.

What exactly have they done that is "evil"? Is earning a profit evil, in your opinion? Please tell me. I know we aren't allowed to discuss politics on these forums, but I'm not going to let that get away. It's probably best to lock this thread before this turns into a large "political" discussion.

I was just trying to figure out how popular the 2 DLCs are in terms of sales, not trying to start a political discussion.

From a video game perspective; resellers take money away from Publishers and Developers. You know, the people who develop and publish the games you play.

Scenario A: You buy a brand new game at a store. Obsidian and gamesas gets chunk of that money, and get a +1 in their "bought this game" column. If a lot of people buy it, they get lots of money and can make more games like it.

Scenario B: You buy a used game at GameStop. Obsidian and gamesas get zero money, and have no way to track the sale. GameStop keeps 100% of the money so they can ... Uh .. make the store prettier? And when you're done, you'll probably give it back to GS for $5 store credit, and they'll sell the exact same copy again for another $20-30.

DLC circumvents the stores. Not only preventing resellers from selling it used, but also makes less middle-men on new games. The FO3 DLC wasn't sold retail until GotY edition, as far as I know. And even better, DLC can help give an accurate count of people actively playing a game. If you buy a game and stop playing it a week later, you're probably not getting the DLC. If you buy it used, and love it, you probably will buy DLC.

Hope that was unpolitical enough ;)
