Lairs Never Respawn

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:46 am

I'm wondering now because it just dawned on me that all of the various lairs and hidey-holes you explore never respawn throughout the entire adventure during Fallout 3. Oblivion's system had areas repopulated after 72 hours. I'm wondering if there has been any news if indoor zones repopulate this time around?

What I think that would be interesting is if after two to three weeks certain areas will get new enemies and give you a reason to go back. Also to add a bit of randomness to it there is a chance the enemy types will change or a special named foe will appear. As an example take Springvale School, once you clear it of the raiders if you return a couple weeks later you find that the ants have overrun the place.

I remember in FO3 the enemies (at least the raiders) respawned also fter 3 or so days.

Would love that idea though, kill a feral ghoul infested place and later on find out that raiders have turned it into their own place.

Thats why I only get the pc version incase devs screw something up like that. In fo3 I remember it always realy broke immersion that realy good hidy holes like the super duper mart would become vacant forever.

Which will ultimately result in:
"Oh damn, i missed X piece of loot in that building. Now ive got to fight my way through it all over again. Great."

Imma say no, as i often find the combat quite tedious when im trying to do something else entirely.

1 death claw isn't that hard to deal with. except that they slice threw armor.... but if it could multiply... ekk!

but yes, it gets anoying when a grenade of a blow power generator nocks everything not bolted down all over the room and you have to hunt for that clip of ammo that was blasted away and hope it wasn't nocked threw the floor.

I'm pretty sure they all re-spawn.. maybe quest areas don't but any explorable tunnels or buildings certainly did. I actually found it annoying in some places where I seemed to travel on the same road a lot... "oh crap.. the raiders are back..".. "oh crap .. those super mutants are back." Maybe I saw it more because I like to not fast travel and end up running back and forth and a lot. I usually only fast traveled if I was getting tired and wanted to get some errands done quickly before I shut off the game...

I never saw respawn indoors much in FO3, only once but I was never able to repeat that event.
Raider camps outside yes all the time.

And as for me wanting it, not so much people say realism but in three days or even a month for a whole slew of baddies to have set up again is more unrealistic imo.
Especially when you can just rest outside the front for three days and violla hey presto insta spawn...
For my next trick a vorpal bunny a thong and free xp.
The only benefit is to keep playing the same character, repeating the same things grinding out xp, but again thats just my opinion.

I had the police station's upper floor (for the big town mission) get respawns.
the deathclaw cavern had respawns, the yaugui cavern also respawned.
the old onley underground respawned.
the subway systems respawn.
the nuka cola factory respawned.

I never had these problems in FO3. The only times I saw that they didn't respawn was:

1). If they were named NPCs, obviously
2). The Fire Ants in Grayditch after you complete the quest, but some still populated/respawned in the metro
3). Slavers, I think, but only the ones located in Paradise Falls

Maybe some others too, but whether the enemies were Yao Gui, Raiders, Super Mutants, Giant Ants, Robots, or Deathclaws, they always respawned, inside or out...

This wasn't a problem in Fallout 3 on the PC as there was one standout mod that
altered this game behavior. Sorry I do not recall the name of the mod. Was one of
many one can find on Fallout Nexus.

One could alter the time base on when things would begin to repopulate and even
alter other types to re-spawn in some areas if desired. The mod also allowed for
more difficult to kill mobs to show up.

really, a non issue guys. That is what the MOD community is for. To allow you to
alter the excellent base game to be even more awesome and in tune to what YOU want.

It is why we play games like this on a PC and not on some gameboy.

Yes, I own a PS3 so I can insinuate smear on inferior platforms all I want.

I'm actually ok with buildings and hiding spots not respawning enemies. Think about in real life. If you entered a cool looking place called Springvale Elementary, and found the bullet riddled bodies of raiders and all of the good stuff was gone, how long would you stick around? The place obviously isn't that secure, and who knows how long the bodies have been there. Whoever did it might be back tomorrow. Just a plausible explanation for why places don't repopulate.

I never minded enemies not respawning in some buildings. I mean come on, who's about to set up camp in a building full of the corpses of the previous inhabitants? Do you think the Raiders might think, "hmmm, maybe we should go somewhere where we haven't been slaughtered"?

Or, it could be that there are just not enough people around to move in after the first group is wiped out. I see this here in my town which went through an oil patch bust. People have moved out, and no one is moving in so houses stay vacant for a long time.

It's not like they're instances. They're one-time runthroughs.

I don't really care either way.
Enemies respawn in the wasteland itself after 3 days and thats good enough for me.
Heck thats what made raiders fun for me :)

It is a RPG as well as a shooter. And it is alot more realistic to assume that after oyu go into a building and shoot up all the raiders that 30 more wouldn't move in within the week.

Which is why there is very rarely any incentive to visit the same place twice. In Oblivion I would often visit the same mines/forts/ruins for loot. Oblivions "dungeon" system was better in my opinion. You even had a reason to get to the end due to there being a boss style enemy that had above normal loot.

Please dont play the realism card, its a very weak argument. Fallout New Vegas is not a realistic game, even hardcoe mode.

Some people have gotten used to dungeron respawning.

that and to be honest its interesting sometimes to go back and see whats there.but it was also annoying sometimes to realise you forgot something andhave to slog you way back through a respawned dungeon just because of some abritrary timer clicks over

I honestly couldn't care less, although I believe un-named NPCs in certaina area did respawn inside.

Anyways, I don't care as long as NPCs respawn in the wasteland.
